New Medicaid requirements to cost Missouri $67 million to implement, only about 50-60,000 Missouri Medicaid recipients are unemployed.

Womp womp more tax dollars wasted by brain dead decisions by brain dead people who hate us and want us to die.

They actually spent $16 million on this building just to spite the city.

Kehoe announces that they are putting together a plan to ask Missouri residents to phase-out the income tax via ballot measure in next year's election.

They hope to reduce the state's 4.7% flat income tax to 0% across a decade. Currently, the income tax makes up some 63% of the state's tax revenue.

Kehoe says the plan will include ways to raise new tax revenue to help offset the major cut the state would experience, likely in new use taxes and use and sales tax increases.

The measure would only require a simple majority in both the House and Senate to be placed on the ballot.

So raise the state's portion of the sales tax to 16%? Start applying it to services? Apply it to gas and cigs?

JFC. I mean I'm not surprised, it was a disaster in Kansas but anytime some completely insane right wing policy is adopted in another state i wonder how long until they do it here.

Good luck to MoLeg. Republican turnout is going to suck in 2026 and the left and the center are furious with all the stupidity. These ham fisted attempts by the legislature are going nowhere

StlToday - New ads urge Missourians to help Kehoe cut state income tax

The concept could mirror plans that have circulated in the GOP-controlled House and Senate in recent years that would rely on sales taxes on services to make up the financial hit.

Why do Missourians keep voting for legislators who want the most regressive taxes they can devise. The plan appears to be to tax the folks who need to buy the most staples of life - growing families. And end all progressive income tax and property tax - to benefit the rich. I guess you get what you vote for - and we vote for whatever the wealthy tell us to via expensive ad campaigns. Advertising and ballot candy works.

Because the conservative brain is so pickled in right wing propaganda after the last 25 years that they don’t have or understand policy. All they know is Democrat = bad.

The income tax proposal is a good reminder of how stupid republicans are.

More than half of our state population lives within 30 min of another state but our sister kissing reps in the MoLeg don’t have any knowledge of geography.

Total sales tax rates would exceed 20% in many places if we phase the income tax as currently proposed. People will just drive across the border to make large purchases thereby driving retail business out of state.

Just a really cool quote that needs to be memorialized.
"Hanaway, in a news release, said her office received notice last week of a suit filed in the Intermediate People's Court of Wuhan which declared Missouri to be an economic and reputational threat to China."

OK, I’ll have to rant here. Because they are constantly attacking a marginalized community (trans, drag queens) what sense does this make? I grey up next to IL that don’t mandate insurance or inspections and someone ran into me as a teen and I was out my car. Totaled. Done really want safety? I think their priorities are out of line and miss stated.

Stl PR - Kehoe wants Missourians to decide whether to eliminate the state income tax

https://www.stlpr.org/government-politi ... state-2026

In other words shift taxation down the income ladder. As with the tariffs.
The biggest scam going is that income taxes are the worst. Unlike sales, property, fuel, utility taxes, you only pay income taxes if you have income, and since you have income, you can pay the taxes!

Current income tax brackets are stuck in the 1920s
$0 to 1,313 0
$1,313 - 2,626 2.00% of > $1,313
$2,626 - 3,939 $26 plus 2.50% of > $2,626
$3,939 - $5,252 $59 plus 3.00% of > $3,939
$5,252 - $6,565 $98 plus 3.50% of > $5,252
$6,565 - $7,878 $144 plus 4.00% of > $6,565
$7,878 - $9,191 $197 plus 4.50% > $7,878
$9,191 $256 plus 4.70% of > $9,191

How about
$0 - 25k 0%
$25k - 75k 2.5% of > $25k
$75k - 125k $1250 plus  3.5% of  > 75k
$125K - 200k $3000 plus 5% of > 125k
$200k and up $6750 plus 7% of > 200k

Post1:51 AM - Jan 14#794

That'd put the tax cut/ tax increase line at about $309k, so maybe the progression should be steeper.

$0 - 10k 0%
$10k - 50k 3% of > $25k
$50k - 75k $1200 plus  5% of  > 50k
$75k - 125k $2450 plus  8% of  > 75k
$125K - 200k $6450 plus 10% of > 125k
$200k and up $13950plus 12% of > 200k

The break even would be at $102k. I think that's about the top 20% would get a tax increase
Keep in mind these brackets are after deductions. The standard deduction for 2025 is $15,750.

This would be great for IL. People will live in Missouri but do their shopping in Fairview Heights. Go for it!

The St. Clair Square will rein supreme! Beware Chesterfield!

A potential issue with this is that every white color professional on the Missouri side of the KC metro runs for KS. Less of an issue here in St Louis. Top of mind over there.

The top rate, the only rate in IL is 4.95%.

Post4:11 AM - Jan 14#798

The top rate was 6% starting at $9k in 2015. Now it's 4.7% starting at $9,191. What do we have to show for this cut? The Gov today was complaining about stagnant population and job growth. It's not working.

IL also has severe property tax at TX levels from its time as a more purple state. Not to mention the state voted down a progressive tax referendum. IL voters aren’t immune from dumb decisions.

Did all of the white professionals run from MO to KS from 2012 to 2016? No.
