The Lindell Schnuck's has had a recent cleaning up/remodeling. They do have a guard walking the parking lot, at least the times I've been there. I have also seen a guard chase a person asking for money off the lot. The managers walk around and ask if you need help with anything. I even had one walk my case of beer to my car for me, even after I said I could handle it myself. They seem to have more check out lanes open than before. I have no problems with the produce or meat department and have never bought anything rotten there. They now have a very modest ethnic food section which I'm sure will grow. They even sold out of pre-packaged prosciutto last week because it was on sale...do people generally eat prosciutto in the ghetto? Anyhow, I lived right near there in the 90's and it is 100 times better now. They are trying and I think it's very, very apparent.
The word, "ghetto" originated in Europe where Jews were forced to live in segregated areas before being sent to concentration camps where they were exterminated.Matt Drops The H wrote:Yeah, DeB, I don't see the need to apologize.
I am just reticent to use the term "ghetto" at all, for its possible racial undertones. But many do use it to legitimately refer to a place that is quite simply rundown and draws some characters.
My major complaint about this store was whenever I went there, the smell of foul, fried fish (catfish? buffalo? mutant deathfish?) was completely overwhelming. And disgusting. And sickening.

Schnucks pulled building permits this month for a $75,000 renovation of the Lindell store. Don't expect much for that price. They spent millions renovating their Ballwin store. $75k won't even replace the floor tiles.
You mean Brentwood? Last I saw the Ballwin Plaza store was still stuck in the early 90s.Presbyterian wrote:Schnucks pulled building permits this month for a $75,000 renovation of the Lindell store. They just made some improvements to the facade of the store at Brentwood and Manchester, which is architecturally similar to the Lindell store. I wonder if they'll be making similar improvements there - nothing major, but a decent little upgrade, I guess.Presbyterian wrote:Schnucks pulled building permits this month for a $75,000 renovation of the Lindell store. Improvements would be nice, though for 75k, I agree, it won't buy much. I live nearby at Forest Park and Newstead, but the produce isn't always the best. Quality is fine enough, but they lack certain items that I want fresh and are commonly available everywhere else... Like jalapenos...
I would say I shop there 50% of the time, since I work in the County, I usually just swing by the Richmond Heights location.
My only real serious complaint, though not really specific to the Schnucks itself, is that I once watched someone selling their food stamps card for $50... that kind of ticked me off, but such is life.

I agree, $75k doesn't do much.Presbyterian wrote:Schnucks pulled building permits this month for a $75,000 renovation of the Lindell store. Don't expect much for that price. They spent millions renovating their Ballwin store. $75k won't even replace the floor tiles.
At least Schnucks didn't pull a Macy's, i.e., it didn't receive millions of dollars for a non-renovation. I'm not sure what Schnucks will do with $75,000 at the Lindell store, but I'm pretty sure Macy's didn't spend more than $7,500 on its 'renovations'.
If I had to guess, with 75k they are probably looking at doing some interior remodeling - and by that I mean moving around some of the product shelves and shifting some of the deli/meat/seafood counter areas - probably expanding them as right now they are much behind other stores... If I recall correctly, they don't have a meat counter at all atm... (Deli meats and seafood counters, and freash meat available, just not a butcher counter.)

I shop at the Lindell Schnucks often, but that whole center seriously needs to be demolished and redeveloped along the new form based zoning code. I would consider it a bigger blight than Federal Mogul due to it's higher profile positioning (despite not having highway visibility).
I wouldn't go so far as to call it "blight" or even compare it to a graffiti covered abandoned factory. But I fully agree that a demolish and rebuild would be great.stlexplorer wrote:I shop at the Lindell Schnucks often, but that whole center seriously needs to be demolished and redeveloped along the new form based zoning code. As far as I can remember the CWE store the last of the old Nationals that hasn't even been
extensively remodeled (like Brentwood just was)
completely rebuilt (like Loughborough)
abandoned (like Affton or Twin Oaks)
Does anyone know how much they spent on the Brentwood renovations? I too was hoping they'd tear down and rebuild a more urban store but honestly the reno has been pretty nice, finally feels like a 21st century Schnucks

I remember looking for that number and couldn't find it. A lot more than $75k though.

While the grocery store likely isn't going anywhere, I'd like to see the portion of the shopping center east of Sarah redeveloped. That site deserves better than a strip mall.stlexplorer wrote:I shop at the Lindell Schnucks often, but that whole center seriously needs to be demolished and redeveloped along the new form based zoning code. I know it's not my money and my last name isn't Schnuck. But if it was, I'd get that store extensively redone before the CWE Whole Foods has a chance to get open.

-Or- They could be thinking like this -
Aldi coming to Euclid and Delmar
Whole Foods Coming to Euclid and W Pine
Some food component most likely coming to Vandeventer and FPP (Trader Joes, City Target, Fresh Market, Walmart Neighborhood Market, who knows)
When those 3 come on line with in the next 4 years the Lindell store most likely will take a huge hit.
My guess is the 75K is to do some needed maintenance work, this is an old store and they probably do not see a future there, at least in its present form.
Agreed. Two options are:beer city wrote:dweebe wrote:I know it's not my money and my last name isn't Schnuck. But if it was, I'd get that store extensively redone before the CWE Whole Foods has a chance to get open.

-tear down just the current store and build a small Schnucks like the one at Kehrs Mill and Clarkson
-complete teardown of the strip malls. Build in something like the 3949 Lindell complex with a Culinaria as the anchor.

I'd like to see something like that on the north side of Manchester in Maplewood, too.dweebe wrote: -complete teardown of the strip malls. Build in something like the 3949 Lindell complex with a Culinaria as the anchor.
