Did anyone have the opportunity to go when they had a preview weekend? (Obviously, I didn't.) I believe it's suppose to open officially next spring and will probably offer many awesome views of the Metro area and immediately beyond. Think of all the cool photo oppportunities! 8)

Is anyone even familiar with this project?

That looks pretty interesting. Would like to see some phptos taken from there. I wonder if downtown is visible from the high point.

That tower is butt-ugly, but it should be a great view, and a great attraction. I've been to the confluence of the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers, and it's awsome to just stand there and take it in. Strangley, I've never been to our own major river confluence.

This is right on the cycling trail that connects Alton (and the Great River Road) with Chain of Rocks (and the Riverfront trail). The structure has been just sitting there for at least 3 years, but there wasn't any cladding in place last autumn.

It's likely to be the only reason I start taking a bike lock (and camera) with me on that trail.

I'd like to go some time soon. I drove past it the other day, but I was working.

Whatever happened to this project? My daughter's class is going to visit something in Illinois called Lewis and Clark Park, and this was all I could think of. Did this ever get finished? It seems to be taking longer than the actual expedition.

As of a month ago they were actively working on the buildings at the base. I believe its pretty close to opening.

The whole confluence area is really a national treasure. Let's hope that it can be developed to the point that people can access and enjoy it, but not enough to destroy the incredible energy and feeling of the area. I'll have to try and check out the tower sometime soon - preferably by bike.

Sounds like May of this year. Why do all the top tourist attractions in Illinois consist of platforms for viewing Missouri?

Does the bike trail along the Great River Road access this tower?

I'm not sure, exactly, but it is accessible from IL 3 and the Madison County Trail along the top of the canal levee.

I see in one of the photos in the Post that they named one side of the tower Lewis, and the other Clark. This was my suggestion for the Arch -- name the North leg Lewis since it is nearest Lacledes Landing and name the South Leg Clark since it is nearest Clark Street and nearest Chouteu's Landing. With the word LEWIS in very large letters inlaid into the walkway leading into the North Leg, (and similarly CLARK in the South Leg walkway), it would give visitors an idea right away what the monument is about something important. And if they didn't know their directions, they could tell friends to meet at the Lewis leg, vs. North leg on top of the words Lewis.
