Say bye bye to this little piece of county history at Lemay Ferry & Bayless:

Fences and demo signs are up for all that you see here. I'm guessing a replacement for the QT across the street.

^ that makes me want to f*cking puke. QT is a f*cking scourge that needs to die. I now go out of my way to avoid them—no more business from me. a billion bucks says this demo is either for a new QT, a CVS (since there's a Walgreen's across the intersection), or a different gas station.

The QT at Bowles and Farty Far across from the old Chrysler plant was flattened a few weeks ago and they are rebuilding on the same site. QT should be persuaded to take this approach elsewhere.

Sad. These little clusters of historic urbanism are increasingly rare in the County. While other areas, I'm think of Florissant, are striving to strengthen and popularise their little stretches, Lemay's taking a step back.

^ I think this would fall under Saint Louis County Planning as this is an unincorporated area, right?

That is disappointing The last time I been to Lemay, Afton- Bayless area was way back in 2008 when Iwas a high-school freshmen I though it was quite a interesting area then. If anyone is familiar with the area since then, is leamy and its built environment holding up since then?? I would really hate for the area to decline like so many inner-ring suburbs. :(

If people don't go to an area, the area dies. If people don't support uses of historic buildings, the buildings become abandoned. These buildings formerly housed a pawnshop and a low grade gun shop. Marginal uses at best. QT does way more business than anything else in that intersection. Well, anything except maybe the Walgreen's across the street.

Historic preservation is more about the people using the buildings and shopping or living in them than it is the buildings themselves. Decrying demolition without spending your time and money in the area facing the loss of historic buildings really doesn't advance historic preservation.

^ Yet demolishing buildings like these for cheap retail construction will make it all the more difficult for the area to be "rediscovered" (if indeed it is suffering.... I really don't know much about this area.)

i totally disagree, tiger. this type of demolition and sh*t development is the reason why Lemay is a wasteland. in particular, QT is doing it's best to bring Lemay to all parts of the city.

maybe i'll run over to QT and get a diabetes slurpy and a bag of hydrogenated-oil-o's to celebrate!

Is it the southeast corner?

Can someone fix the picture at the top?

Yes, it is the southeast corner. Everything down to Horn Ave., but I can't say how far back the fencing went, and I haven't been back by there since I first noticed it last week. Upon looking at Maps, unless the demo also includes the homes behind these splendid examples of "Main St. commercial" back to say, Regina Ave., I wouldn't ascertain this to be a future QT or a CVS, because there surely wouldn't be enough room. They probably have those 3 or 4 homes too, though. I'll update if I'm back by there again and no one else has.

Lemay Ferry Redevelopment Inc LLC also owns some of the homes behind.

I don't see anything about this in the St. Louis County Planning Commission docs. Am I looking int he wrong place?

LEMAY DEVELOMENT CORPORATION

One of the significant barriers Lemay businesses face is a lack of suitable commercial space. Most commercial space within Lemay is obsolete and does not meet the needs of 21st century businesses. LDC has taken an active role in trying to address this issue.

Demolition and Abatement of:

700-702 Lemay Ferry, 704/710/716 Lemay Ferry, 706 Lemay Ferry Road & 701 Regina, 718 Lemay Ferry & 815 Horn, 707 Regina, 738 Bayless, 740 Bayless, 742 Bayless, Lemay, MO

I'm told by the development corp that there is no development in place. They are seeking ideas.

Btw, the QT across the street is from 1988, really old for them.

A search doesn't turn up any construction permits of any kind for 700-718 on that site. It does turn up a property maintenance code violation back in January that appears to have been taken care of quickly. Maybe the owner just decided to demolish instead, I don't know.

I was trying to remember if they had recently updated that location with the "Kitchens" upgrade they have given many stores, but I can't recollect.
