An alleged violation of planning and zoning laws has fired up a controversy over one of the newest entertainment venues at the lake.
Lazy Gators at the 7-mile marker off Horseshoe Bend Parkway has caught the attention of the Camden County Planning and Zoning department and some nearby neighbors unhappy about the traffic and noise.
The county has posted a cease and desist ordering the owner, Gary Prewitt, to shut the entertainment spot down. The order from the county gives Prewitt ten days to stop doing business. If he ignores the order, he could be cited by the county.
Planning Director Chris Hall said Prewitt has been operating under catering permits from the Missouri Division of Alcohol and Tobacco to sell drinks. The problem, Hall said, is Prewitt doesn’t have the proper zoning. The property is zoned residential. Residential zoning doesn’t allow for the the type of venue Prewitt is operating according to county regulations.
Prewitt says he’s operating within the laws of the state of Missouri and will continue to do so.
Lazy Gators sits next door to Shady Gator’s, a popular lakefront bar owned by Prewitt. The Horny Toad entertainment complex is located in the same cove.
By water, the land sits at the point where 7-Mile Cove meets the main channel of Lake of the Ozarks. By land, it’s off Sweet William Road on Horseshoe Bend Parkway.
The 1.3 acre parcel takes in about 1,000 feet of shoreline.
Prewitt has built a pool, tiki bar and cabanas where patrons can relax and enjoy the water and view.
Although the property extends to the shoreline, there are no docks. Prewitt has applied to AmerenUE for dock permits. They are under review.
History
This isn’t the first time Camden County and Gary Prewitt have disagreed over this particular piece of property. The county has turned down several requests for rezoning.
Prewitt responded by taking the zoning request to the Camden County Circuit Court, asking for the county’s decision to be overturned. The case is still tied up in court.
