I thought I would post these on this forum since I know you guys are really struggling with Cordish/Cardinals and Ballpark Village.

I follow StL development, but don't post too often over here because I simply don't have time.

KC's development has had problems as well. They should be topping out on a 37 story condo/hotel right now, but that has not even broke ground and Downtown KC still needs more residents for all of this to be successful long term.

But I think for the most part, it's been very much a success so far. Like StL, KC has tons of urban districts and areas to offer locals and tourists, but like StL, most suburbanites are pretty intimidated by the "city". The district helps alleviate that problem a bit by giving the city another entertain/dining option.

Sometimes I wonder if you really want something quite as “canned” as the P&L district right between your stadium and the heart of Downtown StL. I mean, if this were in StL, I would avoid it myself and go to the more authentic and real areas of the city, but it does serve a purpose and both KC and STL have a hell of a time getting private investment in the core. So, I would take a Cordish development over under-utilized land and parking lots. At least in KC, there are several historic buildings that are part of the project, two theaters and a major hotel.

I hope all goes well in StL and you get something going soon. That is such a high profile location.

Thanks Matt. I'm surprised this didn't generate more interest. After I posted this, I saw that this section "excludes" KC and Chicago. When I posted, I saw KC and didn't comprehend the "excludes" part.

What's that about, did you guys decide to purge anything regarding KC and Chicago? haha.

Anyway. StL is going to be one of my first cities to hit this spring with things green up. I plan to get brand new aerials and more ground photos since I think that my StL photos don't quite measure up to most of my cities on my website.

Again, good luck with your Cordish development. Something needs to go there.

^Nice photos of a great city. KC is looking good! I hope to visit there again some day soon. That said....

I don't mean to be a butthole, but posting photos of KC in a St Louis forum is a no-no. What's next, pix of New York? Dubai?

Okay, okay, I understand that it was a "mistake", that the qualifying phrase "excluding metro KC" wasn't noticed . But-- since when did downtown KC fall under the category "outstate Missouri"?? :?

And what about this comment: "Did you guys decide to purge anything regarding KC and Chicago? haha"

Call me suspicious, but it almost seems like this was deliberate, and he is daring the mods. Am I seeing this incorrectly?

Nah, Grid is fine. He's a good guy with exceptional photography talent. The no KC and no Chicago is there because we don't want discussions for those respective cities here, but we wanted to give a place for some discussions about the rest of the two states our Metro is contained within. But in this case, he is showing us what Cordish has done in KC, and maybe a little idea of what could be in our future. Good to know that you will be back soon to take some new treats for my eyes.

Well, I guess I'm starting to feel a little overprotective of this forum. I know that it was created as a means for discussion of St Louis topics-- and those of the St Louis region-- without comparisons to other cities. I just want to keep it that way.

You see, I also look at other forums, such as SkyscraperCity and SkyscraperPage, and I constantly witness firsthand the rampant rule violations, city vs. city arguments, rudeness, etc. The quality of UrbanSTL is hands above those other forums. And that's a direct compliment to all the members of UrbanSTL, and the mods as well.

Why would I go through the trouble to post on this forum just to "test the moderators".

I'm not 12 years old. I just thought you guys might be interested in what Cordish built in KC. This is not a KC photo thread, it's pretty much the P&L district and that's it.

I found it sort of odd that you guys are actually saying no KC or Chicago threads. I really did read that wrong.

I just didn't expect that. I enjoy the photo threads that Jive posts on the KCrag forums.

Anyway, I'm not into comparing KC to StL since I'm pretty much into both towns.

Again good luck with your cordish development, hopefully you can learn a few things from KC (right or wrong) with your development.

Thanks again Matt for defending me, I appreciate it. :)

Thanks for posting those photos, GRID. And thanks to the mods for not zapping it. I agree that this is relevant, in the context of our own Cordish development.

Great shots, too, by the way.

Hey GRID,

I just got back from visiting KC this past weekend. I had a great time there!

I passed through the P&L District, and it was very alive. It's great that Missouri has two awesome cities, and I encourage fellow stl urbanites to experience our neighbors to the west. It's definately worth the visit.

While the district seemed alive, it seemed to attract a different type of crowd, much different than a place that, say, Atomic Cowboy or Upstairs Lounge, would attract...but that's expected I guess. It's definately a go-to destination for tourists, and I felt it attracted a bit of an older crowd, and not very diverse (almost 98% white and 85% 30+ from observations). I believe when ballpark village is built, it will attract the same type of crowd from the suburbs, who would normally go to a place like "harpos" in chesterfield, and would not detract people from people who would frequent Wash Ave/or Loop.

Overall, I was very impressed with the district (esp the grocery store), and the energy of it seemed to overcome the negative perseptions of not being able to meet expectations. Of course, this was just one weekend, but I hope the very best of the district.

I still felt the plaza was a more enjoyable area, as it didn't seem so "manufactured" as the p&L district, and seemed very authentically KC. My one complaint with P&L is the manufacturedness of the locations. There seemed to be too many irishy type pubs and places that could be located Anywhere, USA.

Thanks for the pics. KC is a great city!

Great pictures, Grid! I know what you mean about 'canned' developments but I wish St. Louis had that going on right now so there is some Eastern Mo. jealously going on.

What I liked about this thread is that I forget Missouri has TWO great urban centers. Living in Atlanta, well, Atlanta dominates the state of Georgia and claims everything - even the capitol - for itself. Missouri has two professional football teams, two baseball teams, two great art museums, cultural districts and history and so on... If you look at the total urban assets of Missouri, it's really very impressive.

Hey-let's encourage massive sprawl and thread these two great cities together!

Okay maybe not.

cheers

Thanks for the pics, GRID. We'll treat ya' better here than I get treated over at the Rag', haha.
