There appears to be a perfectly good two-story commercial building being demolished on Jefferson at Allen (just south of the McDonald's). Jefferson has enough gaps as it is.
^ Is this another senseless demo or is something going there? Hopefully not a suburban strip mall.

The back wall collapsed recently. It's an emergency demolition ordered by the Building Commissioner, Frank Oswald.
The building is far from needing emergency demolition, although I'm far from being surprised at the usual procedure: bricks fall, demolition is ordered.
Our public safety laws ignore the last thirty years of construction innovation in St. Louis. We have learned how to save buildings like this one, but our laws force the Building Division to demolish.
(By the way, the rear wall of a building is almost never structurally integral. This one is not.)

This is a surprise. I drive by this building all the time and have never noticed anything really wrong with it. A collapsed back wall doesn't justify tearing it down. I know a few people that would have gladly fixed it up if the City would have simply given it away instead of tearing it down. But that tactic would have actually required using their brains, so I guess we'll have to settle for a vacant lot.
^^
If we're discussing the building in that Google street view, I'm actually quite surprised. That building was for sale on MLS for a very long time. However, the current (or former) owners had begun doing some structural rehab, including new floor joists and ceiling rafters.

For the past couple of days, I have noticed that the banner for the demolition company is gone from the building. I assumed that meant thje demo had started, but I have driven by the place about 10 times since it came down and I see nobody outside the building and no signs anybody is inside. Is it possible, however unlikely, that the plugged was pulled on the demo?

I noticed the same thing. It certainly doesn't look like much work has been performed.
