If they are closing, this will be a big disappointment. The corner hardware store seems to be a dying breed. These small businesses just cannot compete, in most cases, with the big box hardware stores. In this case, Home Depot. . . Unfortunate!

I've noticed with Oak Hill Hardware, which is more or less around the corner from me, I struggle to give them my business due to hours. They're closed by 5:30, so if I need or want to get something during the week, I pretty much have to give my business to Home Depot.

A dated format indeed.

Sad, but not surprising. The end of an era.

St. Louis Public Radio just did a piece on some local hardware stores: Three Small St. Louis Hardware Stores On Keeping Up (And Keeping Open)

The old Hanneke building is being rehabbed, and they uncovered a nifty vitrolite facade on the west facade, where a coffee shop is going. They're also saving the old projecting sign on the corner.

I heard the coffee shop (somethingBUCKS) is sharing space with some sort of environmental office.

Sounds like some cool artsy stuff is happening in the old Hanneke Hardware building. Here's a link to an article in All The Art magazine. Article on pages 22 - 23:

Curious when that cafe was opening. They originally said February but it sounds like there were structural issues around the windows that had to be fixed. Sounds like it's still coming. They were talking about a rooftop portion as well

I'm not sure how true/false this rumor is, so we'll just have to wait and see.

I was told by an employee at Favazza's that he thinks Amighetti's is going to be moving into this building.

Note: The owner of Favazza's also owns Amighetti's.

So they can be flanked on both sides by other sandwich shops and off of the extremely walkable current spot on Marconi? Sounds like a poor business choice to me.

I wish USBank across the street would redevelop their property and construct a 6 story apt building.

^^ Amighetti's is no longer on Marconi. There was a major disagreement between the owner of Amighetti's and the operator of Amighetti's, and so Amighetti's is out. The operator has reopened the business as Colino's.

Amighetti's is looking for a new place to open up on The Hill.

Ah, gotcha.

Honestly, the sandwiches aren't even great when compared to the other shops around the Hill.  But if they want to reopen, I guess all the more power to them.  Surprised they aren't considering the Steve's Hot Dogs space.
