Do they not also make rolled sheet for the auto industry, or was that one of the lines idled.? There used to be coil cars coming out of there all the time. Every now and then you'd even see a train of hot bottles full of molten steel trundling across the highway glowing in the night. Got to see them pour off slag once. That was fun. Would be happy to see more production back at the plant.
A pretty good article on recent steel industries announcements of new plants to meet demand and modernize including US Steels new plant to be built down river in AK. Plants placed in part for regional/logistics (river access) and of course the norm now for big industrial projects to get/targeted specialized tax credits.. Can't help to think that the short term impact on Granite Steel plant probably limited due to the increase demand. However, you have to wonder if Illinois needs to get its game on a lot sooner.

US Steel has been sold to Japanese based Nippon Steel.
Anyone have insight as to how this will impact the announced layoffs in Granite City? Nippon says it plans to ramp up production in the US.

Hard to imagine it can be any worse than the direction the plant was already heading. Big Fortune 500 loss to Pittsburgh. They’re getting the “HQ will remain in Pittsburgh” but every rust-belt city knows what that means.

Yes, this deal is likely perceived in Pittsburgh like the AB sale was viewed in St. Louis. They are losing an icon. Hopefully, Nippon keeps their word and maintains similar operations in that area.
It appears as if the non-union facility in Arkansas could be a huge determent to the future Granite City Steel.
