Not that surprising. Club Fitness really has invested in expanding and upgrading their facilities, all while eating up more of the target market Golds relies on. Add in plenty of cheaper options like Planet Fitness and then the Lifetime Fitness expanding locally to gain more of the top end market, and Golds was just squeezed out.
I'm also not surprised. I belonged to a Golds in KC and it was a pretty awful experience. The gym itself was functional enough, though there was quite a bit of broken equipment and a water fountain that never got fixed. It was what happened after it unexpectedly shut down a couple years ago that really pissed me off.
There was some high-rise development that was supposed to replace the building the gym was in, a development that apparently collapsed because the abandoned gym building is still there. Either way Golds Gym shut the place down anyway and transferred all of the memberships to another local gym in KC...not a Golds Gym though, some *hole on Broadway called The PortKC. The PortKC never once reached out to me but did continue to charge my credit card. Apparently there is some fine print in the Golds Gym membership contact that says in the event the gym closes, your membership, payment info, and everything else can be transferred to a "partner" gym and they'll just keep running up the bill.
Long story short, Golds Gym sucks and I'm glad they're gone. If anyone here is a member at one of these St. Louis locations, I would make sure you get your membership cancelled just in case you end up in a similar situation to mine.
