I went to the "soft grand opening" of Franco, a hip French restaurant in the Soulard Market Lofts (aka Welsh Baby Carriage Factory). The food was very good, service impeccable. Most impressive, however, was the cool ambiance. Very metro and sleek. Modern mixed with vintage. It is now open for business-- a great place to take out-of-towners.

^ I had heard of a restaurant coming to this development, but I've never heard any specifics about the place. Anyway, based on your description, it sounds like I'm going to have to give it a try some time soon!
On a side note, I wish the development (and the smokestack) still bore the Welsh Baby Carriage Factory name. Or, at least they could've restored the smokestack without changing the name on it. It was cool and quite distinctive.

Hey STLgasm - I was there too! I was very impressed with the atmosphere. We didn't stay for dinner, but drinks and appetizers were really good. I'll definitely be back.
I've tried Franco for lunch once and dinner twice and it was good every time. They have a nice patio (really a deck) that faces west, so the sun kind of bakes you. If French food isn't your thing, don't hesitate to try it. Other than "frites" on the menu, nothing seemed overtly French to me. Also, they have a small private room that probably seats 8-12 that was perfect for a small party.

Great place to eat. Great atmosphere. Ask to sit on one of the benches on a window sill. Very cool.
