Hello,

I am Stephen Kennedy and I live in St. Louis County. I am a visual artist and a new member of this group. I'm posting about my latest long-term photography project called STL 100 that has multiple intersections with urbanism in St. Louis.

STL 100 is a personal "single artist created" photo documentary of all the towns, cities, municipalities and census designated places in St. Louis County. The total number of these entities is about 100.

Over the course of 115 days in the summer of 2024, I traveled to each of these places and created black & white portraits of the environments.

This project can be seen in its entirety on the web. In addition, I have published a book of the first batch of images.

Since completing the first milestone of capturing these 100 place-related photographs, I have been back to most for new images.

The project is ongoing.

I think you're way to kind to a couple of places, but wow, great stuff. Insightful observations, subtle commentary, and some darn solid photography. Nicely done!

Thank you for sharing your observation of the project.

The nature of photography means that my artistic or craft choices becomes an influence on what I end up publishing. That said, I don't claim to be unbiased or objective in any way. In fact, my approach is to "see" each place only in the moment in which I'm there. I try not to have an idea for a photo before I arrive, which isn't always easy.

The phrase "too kind" is fascinating to hear. I'll own that, though my intent is for neutrality.

Because this is an ongoing project, the images on the "front page" get replaced over time.

There is an archive of older images that record how I've seen each place differently on different visits.

^Oh, for the most part I think you do an admirable job at neutrality. And when you're making a comment they generally seem remarkably appropriate. But above all, it's very good art. And the places I think you went a little soft on, well, maybe that's just my own opinion getting in the way.
