That piece also appeared in the Metro section in today's print edition, unfortunately.

How is it biased? The Gonzaga kids came to St. Louis. That is a fact. One of them said she thought her city (Spokane) was bad, but St. Louis is worse. That is a fact - she really said that.
How do those two facts add up to bias? Should the reporter have sought out one kid that said something nice? What if none of them did? Then what? Do you not publish the story?
Just wondering....

That's right- I remember you stating that in a previous post in this thread.
I read the P-D online most of the time. I typically buy the Sunday edition so I'll know what's on sale at Target and Best Buy, or for the occasional special section like those devoted to the Cardinals or Rams. The rest of the time, the P-D print edition really is irrelevant to me. I get my news from a combination of sources, and while I don't mean to be negative, I don't think any of the local media outlets do a great job consistently.

Well, if I was the reporter in this case, I would've perhaps asked whoever said that to expand upon, or clarify their comments. Something like, "In what way is downtown St. Louis worse than Spokane?", for starters. And I'd quote the person who had something constructive to say. If they were turned off by the homeless gathering in Lucas Park, or the abyssmal condition of St. Louis Centre, at least then we're getting somewhere.
In fairness to the Gonzaga folks, I get the impression these students were in downtown solely for their project. And I think they were speaking strictly in terms of poverty based on what they witnessed at the St. Patrick Center, although that quote suggests they painted with a much more broad brushstroke. There probably wasn't much time available to eat sushi at Wasabi or hoist a pint of Schlafly at Flannery's. Perhaps they'd have a more balanced view then.
Without any semblance of context, though, this comment looks like the tripe posted by hit-and-run trolls on STLtoday.com blogs and forums. I think the reporter could've done more to build the story and add context, but I usually think P-D reporters could and should do more.
Just my $.02...and I know it's still overpriced...

I just don't like the tone of the whole article, which is basically: college students think their city sucks until they go someplace suckier to do community service.
The juxtaposition, that while St. Louis kids are going to reservations and Gulf Coast cities to do community service while other kids are coming here, is interesting enough without sliding in the "St. Louis is a real sh__-hole" quote and the quote from the SIUE student about the reservation.

^ I agree completely. Upon further review, I'll take this article with a grain of salt, but I still don't like the overall tone either.
