This article is from February 2, 2009:

MGT is out of touch with reality about the value of SLPS (St. Louis Public Schools) historic schools

Here are some more magnificent school buildings that we might kiss good-bye:

Baden Elementary

Clark Accelerated Elementary

Gallaudet School for the Deaf

Mark Twain Elementary

Scruggs Accelerated Elementary

Shepard Elementary

So, does closing = demolished?

^ Some may be purchased and turned into condos/apartments/something else, but they were built as schools and function best as such. If they could be used by charter schools more would be saved.

They're talking about tearing down Mann Elementary School at Juniata and Oak Hill in my neighborhood and replacing it with a new one. My fear is that the replacement would have all the charm of a Walgreens. I wish they'd look into renovating these structures for reuse.

My grade school had asbestos and it didn't kill anyone. They tore it out my last year and they literally had the school sealed off all summer. The worst thing you can do is to tear it out asbestos or tear a buillding down containing it. You're better off just leaving it alone as far as people's health is concerned, but that isn't always an option.

I think only two schools are at risk for demolition. correct? I highly doubt that any public school still has lead paint and asbestos that hasn't been addressed. SLPS has one of the highest expenditures per pupil in the state; where that money goes is the real question..

Actually, quite a few have already been converted to residential. I'm not quick enough on the computer to find and post links, though.

Alderwoman Florida and TGS oppose the demolition and replacement of Mann with a new school. I'm glad to hear this.

There was 100 person rally last week, which included Alderman Schmid, opposing the closure of Shepard, and other schools, along with promoting the re-opening of Cleveland.

Sorry to boost an old thread, but I just stumbled upon this on Facebook and found it very cool.  I didn't know that at one time the City had a large Public School Stadium in North St. Louis.  It was beautiful.  Along North Kingshighway just north of St. Louis Avenue.  Many of the other buildings in this first pic seemed to have made it to the present day though.

If I've got my bearings right here, Kingshighway should be on the left...Norwood on the right.  St. Louis Avenue is at the top.  Today, I think Granberry would be roughly in the center of the field.

Nearly looks like something Robert Moses would have built in one of his New York parks.
