Didn't see a thread on this yet - SLU just finished tearing down the two old retail buildings on the South Side of Laclede between Vandeventer and the old Laclede Street Bar and Grill (soon to reopen as a sports bar - looking restaurant. More parking?

Actually 3 buildings.

This is the doing of Jimmy John's, moving from Forest Park Avenue a few blocks away to (what I assume is) a newly built, prototypical suburban store with drive-through, at the cost of these three old buildings and a vacant space in the old brewery building.

Correct.

This demo had nothing to do with SLU....although I'm sure SLU supported it.

Thanks, I knew they were moving but hadn't made the connection. That section of FP avenue has a lot of great activity now with JJ's, the new martial arts studio, the Lab Gym, and the brewery. Hopefully the building will attract something equally vital to the JJ's space.

In 1940 we also had 850,000 residents, in 2010- 320,000.

^You're exactly right. Grab your shovels men. It's ok to tear down 2/3rds of the built environment.

It would seem more difficult for people to move into the city if there is nothing ready to occupy.

Good riddance, that traffic looks like a mess and there is no where to park!

Maybe we (urbanists) should invite SLU's new president to a meet up to start a dialogue about what we have and haven't liked about their previous development tactics and what we would like to see from them going forward.

The buildings on the left side of the photo were still standing when I was at SLU. Occasionally raves would be held there. I don't really miss those warehouses, although I would like to see the land used for something besides an intramural field.

This is an excellent idea. How do we do it?

Write a letter? I'd be willing to be part of a group to initiate this if anyone is interested in joining up with me.

Does anyone know of what will be going into the old SLU Law School building? It has been vacant for some time now.

Thank you. That was one quick answer. Anyone know of which departments will be in there?

^ A new department of Father Biondi studies. Looking at the course descriptions in the works, a popular class should be "Father Biondi as Clint Eastwood: "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly"" as well as "Fountains: How an Aesthetic Preference Spread Like Kudzu"

It'll also include the new Biondi School of Art. All the classes are about sculpture.
