The Delta Queen previously docked in Chattanooga has apparently decided to relocate their headquarters to Kimmswick, in Jefferson County. Based on the articles I read looks like they want to sell cruises to multiple destination cities. Working on getting approval to run on oceans but in the meantime it'd be cool to see overnight cruises to some nearby river cities even if it never gets to hit the open ocean. And a return of cruise boats to the riverfront is a welcome sight.

^ A big if on Delta Queen is if it can get a exemption for its wood haul. Has to be codified in law by Federal Government/Congress othwerwise the US Coast Guard will not issue a Certification of Inspection which is required for any passenger vessel for hire. It will be interesting to see what happens, Their is the world of lobbyist/Washington DC and the world of Regulations/CFR's/Coast Guard.

They said last night on the news that everything is contingent on getting an exemption to a law to allow an all wooden boat to be used for excursions.

My understanding is that that only restricts overnight travel. Seems like it could fall back on a strategy of day cruises. Not sure how far they could get in a day. New Orleans runs the Natchez for short river cruises and the Belle of Louisville in Louisvillle does as well, so no reason the Delta Queen couldn't do the same here. Unfortunately the ideal short cruise destination from downtown would be either St. Charles or Alton but that would require passing through the lock and dam, so not sure how workable that would be.

Considering its already outfitted as a hotel with sleeping quarters, overnight cruises definitely makes the most sense.

Wish there was a place for it in St. Louis proper, but yeah, our riverfront really isn't built for it (anymore).

As good a time as any to post this old article from my blog -- New Life on the Old River: Delta Queen Coming to St. Louis.

Prescient(ish)!

Psst...note the article's date.
