David Slay, a chef who formerly operated restaurants in the St. Louis area, has filed for bankruptcy in California, where he lives.
Slay said in court papers that he has debts of $1.8 million, including $330,000 he owes to former Cardinal baseball star Ozzie Smith. Smith was a partner in Smith & Slay's, a restaurant in Clayton that shuttered last spring.
Slay also owes $550,000 to National City Bank, which holds a mortgage on a building Slay owns at 925 Locust Avenue, according to his Dec. 21 bankruptcy filing in Los Angeles.
Slay, who formerly ran ZuZu's Petals in Kirkwood, lives in Manhattan Beach, Calif., with his wife and children. His bankruptcy papers show he sold his house in Los Angeles in September, but still operates Slay's Catering there.
