This may be the reason why his much anticipated restaurant never got off the ground downtown. And Ozzie took a hit!

Restaurateur Slay files for bankruptcy

St. Louis Post-Dispatch

01/04/2005

David Slay, a chef who formerly operated restaurants in the St. Louis area, has filed for bankruptcy in California, where he lives.

Slay said in court papers that he has debts of $1.8 million, including $330,000 he owes to former Cardinal baseball star Ozzie Smith. Smith was a partner in Smith & Slay's, a restaurant in Clayton that shuttered last spring.

Slay also owes $550,000 to National City Bank, which holds a mortgage on a building Slay owns at 925 Locust Avenue, according to his Dec. 21 bankruptcy filing in Los Angeles.

Slay, who formerly ran ZuZu's Petals in Kirkwood, lives in Manhattan Beach, Calif., with his wife and children. His bankruptcy papers show he sold his house in Los Angeles in September, but still operates Slay's Catering there.

I hope that he will quickly sell his building on Locust to a developer so that the renovation can continue. If he's filling for bankruptcy, that's an easy way to pay off those creditors.

Thanks! I was wondering what the hell happened to that building. I had been monitoring its progress--I usually take a walk on my lunch break--and all of the sudden, they just stopped working on it. It's goofy-looking, but I'm sure with all the development in that area that someone will snatch it up.

Martin Van Der Werf of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported today that the Roberts Brothers have made an offer on the building at 10th and Locust. David Slay began renovating it in 2003 for a bar and grill before his money ran out.

Good! I want to be able to drink beer there - it could be a great pub!
