Another developer has proposed turning this place into a wedding/banquet center. This seems to be a better fit. Let's see what the neighbors think.

(I swear I saw an article about it a couple of days ago, but I can't find it now)

Was in the Post I think. Tom Klein, who owns Windows On and Windows Off Washington. He wants to rehab some of it back into an active chapel so they can have ceremonies and then receptions afterwards...

This might be what you were thinking of:

Third plan for St. John’s emerges — will neighbors back it?

(by Tim Woodcock - October 15, 2008)

Windows on Washington, the downtown banqueting company, has made an offer to buy the vacant St. John’s United Methodist Church at Kingshighway Boulevard and Washington Place.

The company would convert the fellowship hall and gym into two banqueting halls, with capacities of 225 and 200 respectively, and it would retain the sanctuary and chapel as religious sites. The company expects that the space would mostly be used for weddings, and perhaps also bar mitzahs and classical music performances.

By opting to keep the sanctuary and chapel as they are, it leaves open the possibility of gaining state and federal tax credits for the renovation project.

This is the best proposal!

Adaptive reuse maintaining the historic integrity of the structure's original use while adapting it to new use. The former UMC would be a fantastic place for a marriage.

I went to the meeting last night at St. John's. First time I have been in this church and it is a very nice church. Walked around and saw the two large rooms that will become the banquet halls, the rooms for cocktailing/receiving, kitchen space, etc...

Overall reception from the neighbors was positive and I think this one will move forward successfully. It will be fun to follow this project and watch it develop.

Time is of the essence because in the short time that the heating/cooling has been turned off, the interior is starting to suffer.

The seven “core employees,” including longtime appraisers Susan Kime and Terry Beye, gave notice starting Jan. 27 amid allegations that the company failed to pay customers on time, according to Kime. She said the group of former employees will launch Link Auction Galleries this spring, naming their company after the architect Theodore Link, who designed Union Station as well as a church at 5000 Washington Blvd., which the new company is under contract to buy.

I have often racked my brain as to what to do with this beautiful building. Auction house never occured to me but its an excellent use for it.

I thought they were trying to convert it into a brewery, or is that the church across the street? Either way, good to see development there.

You're thinking of the church across the street, at 500 N. Kingshighway: Brewery seeks to open in old Central West End church

Haven't heard anything about that in a while, though.

^ thanks. yeah, you'd think that they would have found something else if this didn't go through..... they've got the resources (they also own Cafe Ventana, Hendrick's BBQ and I think one or two other things) and Cathedral Brewing itself seems to be doing well with distribution. Perhaps they are just too focused on their other projects at the moment.

I think the Cathral Square proposal across the street might be dead. Gurpreet Padda and Ami Grimes are focused on opening a barbeque joint in Edwardsville next.

Auction house seems to me to be an odd use for St. John's. I will be glad to see it occupied, though.

nextstl says the Cathedral Square proposal is moving forward with beer production to begin this year and bar/resaturant -- possibly moving Sancturia -- to open in 2015. Very cool if it proceeds!

I imagine it will be similar to Pittsburgh's Church Brew Works, which is incredible (and the church looks strikingly similar to ours):

Really exciting project. I hope it doesn't get shut down by NIMBYs.
