The Container Store, a leading national retailer of storage and organization products, said Tuesday that on March 3 it will open its first Missouri store in Brentwood Square, on Brentwood Boulevard south of Highway 40 (Interstate 64).

The 24,000-square-foot store, located between Pier 1 Imports and REI, will employ about 70 workers. The space previously was occupied by Organized Living, which closed last year after the troubled Ohio-based chain filed for bankruptcy protection.

In contrast, the Container Store has had notable success. The privately held company said annual sales continue to grow at an average of 15 percent to 20 percent a year, with 2006 sales expected to exceed $500 million. The Dallas-based company is credited with creating the storage and organization category within the retail industry when it opened its first store in 1978.

THis is actually quite a big upgrade from Organized Living. We went to a Container Store in Chicago and I would compare Organized Living to being a Wal-Mart or Target level of store, whereas the container store is much more upscale...higher end merchandise, especially the colset systems.

I'm glad that something is finally going in this space, especially considering it is something completely new to this area. However, if I remember correctly I think their prices are a bit higher than OL's...not that it matters to me anymore since I no longer have an income.

I agree. This is a big coup for St. Louis. The Container Store is nicer and the staff very informed and helpful. I have gone to the one in Houston - Galleria area.

[sarcasm on][heavy] Oh yes, I can remember the think BIG ad that prompted this 'coup.' The Bottle District, eh, didn't really like it - expanded metro?, we're not really a big city - Chouteau Lake, pipe dream . . . but THIS? This is BIG. [/heavy][sarcasm off]

Just because better things didn't happen doesn't mean that this isn't good.

I have a hard time understanding how a store can sell more upscale containers. Its not like Organized Living sold wet paper bags.

It's actually pretty cool. They use the word container pretty loosely, and it's mostly just methods of organization. Shelving, closet organizers, and filing equipment are included. Their merchandise also has a fairly cosmopolitan look to it.
