what is up with the barricades ALWAYS being up in City Garden on 9th Street? This has been an amazing addition downtown, but 9th st. should be open? It cuts off traffic from moving north to the retail, office businesses along 9th. Who's idea was this? i can certainly understand if there's an event of if the park is packed, but it seems to be the norm to just shut the street. I HATE how STL is so street-closing friendly. As someone who studies urban planning, this is rarely a good idea. I still fume that Locust is closed between Broadway and 4th.

I've got no problems with the street closure, particularly during the summer when there are many little kids (including my soon to be 2 year old daughter)racing between the waterfall and the fountain area.
There's a lot more egregious street closures than this to complain about.

maybe we should close Market and Chestnut, just to be safe since so many kids are running around. watch your kids. open the street, unless it's crazy packed or for special events.

It's a trade-off, but let's be honest. There simply isn't enough traffic downtown to require the street to be opened. And I think I do a pretty good job watching my 2-year-old, but City Garden is so much better because you can simply enjoy the whole garden without traffic cutting through it. Like I said, it's not 100% positive, but it's a good trade-off in this case. The street is open for rush hour and open more often outside of summer.
If you owned a retail business along 9th street, would you like your street traffic being cut off from the south side of downtown? Urban planners have LONG said the gateway mall has unfortunately divided the CBD in two, and sadly the southern side is more lifeless partially as a result. The more free movement and integration within this grid the better. again, this isn't a huge deal, but I always see it closed off.
You make a good point. I wonder what business owners along 9th Street think.

I have no problem with this closure. And it doesn't seem to be affecting the businesses along 9th Street at all.
OK, I correct this. It was closed this morning. Maybe they close the street all day only in summer?bprop wrote:I've always seen 9th St open in the mornings, during rush hour.

How many people from Soulard or Lafayette walk to Schnucks on 9th? I bet they ALL drive. 9th open would be better. maybe we should just close off every block along the mall with this kind of thinking...

^ If the whole mall was like City Garden you'd be on to something. Anyway, no one from Soulard or Lafayette Square should take 9th to get to Culinaria anyways. From either the best route is likely Tucker to Olive since the garage entrance is on Olive - which you can't turn left on from 9th Street anyway.

I'm guessing they use Tucker or 7th to get across the railroad tracks...and around Purina...unless you know a shortcut...

The project to eliminate 9th Street through City Garden has started. Seems like a pretty extensive project since BSI has a whole construction trailer at the site
