MoDOT Begins Work to Replace 100 Year Old Chouteau Bridge, Feb. 17, 2005

February 9, 2005 ? For immediate release

ST. LOUIS ? The Missouri Department of Transportation, with its contractor KCI Construction Company, will work to remove and replace the bridge located between Vandeventer and 39th St. Crews will close the bridge February 17, 2005. All work is scheduled weather permitting.

On February 14, 2005, at 7 a.m. crews will also begin working on the Sarah Bridge over the I-64 ramps at Vandeventer. Truck should use Grand or Kingshighway to access the area.

The eastbound exit ramp to the Chouteau Bridge from Interstate 64 will close permanently. By removing the ramp, the Chouteau would maintain the same level of service for motorists while reducing cost. Motorists can still exit onto Vandeventer from Interstate 64.

In 2003, MoDOT agreed to take over Chouteau Avenue from the City. As part of this responsibility, the long overdue Chouteau Bridge between Vandeventer and 39th St. would have to be replaced, as it is nearly 100 years old. The Chouteau bridge project includes replacing the bridge and providing pedestrian accommodations. Chouteau carries traffic over the Union Pacific and Burlington Northern railroad tracks. Access to and from I-64 will be through a signalized intersection at Vandeventer.

Motorists are encouraged to avoid the area and use alternate routes of Grand Blvd. and Kingshighway Blvd. during construction. When complete Chouteau Bridge will be a four-lanes, from Vandeventer to 39th St. The $16 million project is scheduled to be complete by mid 2006.

For questions or additional information, please feel free to call Debbie Allen at 314/340-4163.

Our mission is to provide a world-class transportation experience that delights our customers and promotes a prosperous Missouri.

Laclede Gas has been relocating utilities since December, and yesterday temporary lights at the I-64 ramps were put up. I figured it would be starting soon. I guess I will have to take some pics before it is gone.

This is really going to help The Grove. Getting there now from where I live isn't easy. Once I can turn West onto Chouteau from Grand it'll be a piece of cake.

That's not much of an excuse. Just take FPP west to Vandeventer. Or, take Shaw west to Tower Grove avenue. :P ;)

Is it just me, or does this intersection seem crazier now that the lights are off blink? Friday evening traffic was backed up here, and then this morning coming to work Vandeventer was backed up from the I64 light at Papin INTO the Chouteau intersection. Maybe they need to synchronize the 2 sets of lights better.

Driving through that new intersection, I've missed my turn twice. It's a little crazy

I'm not used to the signals being off flash. I've been able to roll through the intersection for two years instead of having to stop. But I drove over the bridge and it is much nicer than the old one, but they should have designed it with sidewalks on both sides.

Hopefully they can make the traffic calming they do here more ascetically pleasing than what they did to natural bridge.

Let's hope crossing improvements at the very least, not sure there is a single intersection in the city limits where Manchester/Chouteau is safe to cross.

What about a protected bike lane?
The community shared their desire for a protected bike lane along the corridor. Although MoDOT can’t install a
vertical barrier along the corridor under the current agreement with the city, the department is talking with the city to
include those options along the corridor between Sarah and Broadway. Although that work won’t happen as a part of this
project, the city and MoDOT are moving toward an agreement for that in the future, as part of a separate project
What is the agreement with the city that is preventing vertical bike lane protections? I feel like it's constantly spun that MODOT is the problem organization, but here it seems like they are actually being held back. Is it possibly because the city doesn't have one of those narrow bike lane street sweepers? It's about time we pick one of those up anyways.
