Idle Time for Youth Gives Ozzie Smith Civic Pride: Investing In Our Community

Last week was challenging trying to figure out how to steer into the prestigious Log Cabin Club, in the dark — the bastion of wealth in the St. Louis region, representing what many call “old money.” However, it’s clear that community-minded guests represent kind-hearts, who are accepting their challenge of a collaborative effort to help North St. Louis with a fresh start — a unique, North St. Louis youth and community, multi-use indoor/outdoor education and recreation facility at the once Carter Carburetor factory site. This is a proposed ambitious $3 million design/construction undertaking which will be spread over a 13-acre area on North Grand Avenue.
The Carter Carburetor site which sat idle for more than 30 years has significant subsurface containments that are being fully extracted, leaving site for all complex uses. According to officials ACF Industries, the EPA and the city of St. Louis have all collaborated to make this reuse possible and safe for future activities where North St. Louis neighbors will benefit.
