And after reading that I am even more concerned. It says this location will pay the same as the Sublette location, but then it says county residents will be able to use it but the city residents will get a discount. Which one is it? I want to know what discount we will actually get.
I'm sure for members of this forum, it will be free since we are biting our fingernails about this one year before it is even open.
I too hope that this discount is less than the South City YMCA dues, but I would guess that country residents will pay more than the current South City dues.

St. Louis residents to get rec center

St. Louis — Bulldozers are making way for a $20.8 million recreation center in Carondelet Park that is designed to give city residents a suburban-style place to heft weights and zip down a water slide.
The Southside Community Center, within view of Interstate 55, will have indoor and outdoor swimming and water park features. Its two-story building will include two basketball courts, weight and exercise rooms, an overhead jogging track and general meeting rooms.
The YMCA of Greater St. Louis is in line to manage the gym and swim parts through membership fees, but the general meeting areas will be open to all residents.
"We're trying to provide some of the amenities that people have in St. Louis County, and make city living that much more attractive," said Alderman Fred Wessels.

This is great! As a kid growing up just north of the park, this would have been sweet to have available. I'm excited for everyone living in the area and hope this will attract more local residents who ride their bikes over rather than those from the county who drive in. This is also good for me, as I plan to move back to the area someday.
The recplex is moving along pretty quickley and is easily visable from I-55. The developer has a sign along the highway, but the rendering is pretty hard to see. I hope the finished product still has huge windows overlooking the baseball fields and highway.
Here is a question for the forum: Do you think YMCA/recplex like this is going to cause some people to want to stay in the city or reconsider moving?
Now if we could just fix the schools.

I'm not sure but it will definitely change some people's perception of STL city----countians and cross-country travelers.

Not that I was looking a whole lot in the county anyway (Maplewood's as far as I'd move), but when I bought my first house in Holly Hills this past summer, that rec plex was a small but important factor in the decision, yes.
Heh, now I'm crossing my fingers for my daughter to get into Kennard...
Looks like the rec center pool is running behind schedule. Check out the January 2009 HHIA newsletter.

This news about not being ready for the summer really sucks. I was looking forward to walking to the pool with my daughter. Oh well. At least this project is nearing completion and won't be a "softball field and parking lot".
BTW, in driving past this construction, I'm amazed at the size of the facility. It really makes an impression as folks drive down I-55. My dad was in town and he couldn't stop looking at it. He may be more excited than I am.

Did anyone attend Monday's Holly Hills meeting? I am curious as to the progress on this. When will it open? Will the YMCA operate it? Prices for membership? Will the YMCA on Loughborough close?
I couldn't attend as I had "kid" duty that night and she goes down at 7:30. I would like to hear an update as well.
I did not attend but this is the last thing I heard...

^thanks for the info, those prices seem reasonable considering a household membership to the Carondelet YMCA is $61/month.

I hate this kind of price structure though. They try so hard to encourage families to get a membership that they screw over single people. $48 a month for a adult membership? No thanks.

Isnt this just the same pricing that all the Ys use? Seems way too high.
Call me an old crank, but this thing was never sold to the tax payer as needing to purchase a membership, although in retrospect I guess it only makes sense. It just seems strange to me my sales tax is closing in on 10% and I'm not going to use the facility.
How was the Sublette Y built. Surely not with government support.

Yeah, I'm really surprised more objections weren't raised to this deal. Essentially building a Y in a public park with public funds just doesn't seem right.
Still, it's a great addition to the neighborhood.

I guess I'm another old crank because I agree with you. I don't like how it was sold as a taxpayer supported project ostensibly open to all citizens that will simply result in the relocation of an existing YMCA in the process, even if I understand why this is what materialized. And, like you said, I don't like not being able to take advantage of all the benefits that the center will offer to members when sales tax is closing in on 10% either.
I might be able to find another $70 lying around each month if tuition for my son's education wasn't so close to $400 per month. Oh well...I guess we'll still get to use the pool every now and then when it opens.

Don't fret. I'm sure it's just like any of these other rec plexs. You can go any time and pay $5-8 per visit. Only think you'll go 2x/week or less then just pay as you go.

That's why I'm not overly concerned. I just think the city should've been a bit more upfront with citizens as plans changed, as there was some confusion and disappointment once people learned that the recplex was a de facto replacement for the existing YMCA less than a half mile away.
I'll pay as I go for now, and I'm okay with that. I can probably scrounge up the $70 per month just by cutting back on lattes, so when the center opens, I'll see how much use I get out of it and reconsider my options accordingly.
I was jogging by the construction area yesterday (Sunday) with the hopes of sneaking in and having a look around. To my surprise, I found a pickup and park ranger car parked along the rode. I didn't see either person, but the fence was down and there were huge tire tracks in the ground. It looked like someone had driven a large vehicle over the fence.
I looked for something in today's Post (online), but didn't see anything. Does anyone have a clue what happened?

I may be the only one checking this thread...and judging from my inquiry on the previous message (with no reply), I may not get a reply here either.
Was running past the Rec Plex on Monday and noticed that there is a white truck laying (sideways) in the future "lazy river". Anyone have an idea on this? I also notice that many of the windows have holes like someone threw rocks in them.
I'm going to the Holly Hills neighborhood meeting on Monday, so I should hear some answers on this, but the most recent newsletter also said they were having issues with some vandalizing.

*sigh*
Like I'm sure a lot of our parents said to us as kids: "This is why we can't have nice things."
