I came across this article on the Black Bear Bakery at Jefferson and Pestalozzi. Looks like they're going to be doing some expanding:

In the fall, Black Bear Bakery looks to complete renovations on a newly purchased building in the historic Cherokee neighborhood. Half of the building will be home to a new bakery and caf?, with an expanded menu offering soups and salads. The other side of the building will host several tenants, including Mangia, which plans to use the space to make pasta.

The previous tenant at 2639 Cherokee was a Subway franchise, which left all fixtures and signage in the abandoned building. When Black Bear employees first began visiting the site, curious local residents would approach and ask, ?Is Subway coming back??

?No,? they were told. ?Something even better is coming.?

I never noticed this establishment--and I travel Jefferson all the time. I'll have to stop in. Thanks for the post.

Hey, thats great when an independent takes the place of a chain - especially a bakery. Good upgrade!

St. Louis' only anarchist bakery.

"If you?ve ever started dinner at Mangia Italiano with a basket of fresh, warm rosemary olive bread, you?re already familiar with St. Louis?s only anarchist bakery. "
