What is the situation?
This year, MoDOT has funding planned to upgrade several signals along Route D (Page Boulevard) and to restripe a stretch of the roadway between Union and Goodfellow in the city. As a part of that, the department has the opportunity to update the roadway to connect to other bicycle-friendly routes that were created as part of the Bike St. Louis Phase 3 plan.
What is the current plan?
This summer, MoDOT will make safety improvements and rebuild several signals on intersections along Route D (Page Boulevard) between Hamilton Avenue and 14th Street. Signal work includes adding dedicated and yielding left turn signals on several intersections, adding pedestrian push buttons and cross walk indications, upgrading the ramps to meet Americans with Disability Act requirements and adding video detection to avoid traffic delays. The striping between Union and Goodfellow would include a road diet, where the road would go to one lane in each direction with a center turn lane, and would include bike lanes.

Goodfellow to Blackstone
Temple to east of Monclair
Belt to east of Arlington
Union to Clarendon
What is the Bike St Louis Phase 3 plan?
Bike St. Louis was a plan established by Great Rivers Greenway and the city of St. Louis in 2004 intended to promote bicycle use as a viable transportation option and to create or improve bicycle connections from downtown St. Louis to destinations throughout the region. This plan was coordinated with the public and voted on by the St. Louis City Board of Aldermen. The addition of bike lanes would connect the newly restriped bike lanes on Union with the shared bike/vehicle lane on Goodfellow, which connects to the Ruth Porter Mall and St. Vincent Greenway.
How will this help?
Improving the signals and placing this section of roadway on a road diet are projected to slow speeds along this stretch of Page Boulevard. In addition, the updated signals and crosswalk improvements would make the roadway safer for pedestrians, cyclists and transit users.
Can more be done?
There was discussion about further improvements along Page Boulevard(Route D) with the Board of Aldermen and the Better Family Life Center. At this time, due to MoDOT’s current funding situation, we have no funding identified for further work along Page Boulevard for the foreseeable future.
