It looks like a hoosier bar, so I haven't gone in.

HiWay bar is a great little place.

Anyone been in that One Night Stand place on Gravois? I've heard stories about it that I don't know are true or not.

Really frightening dive is Grandma's on Manchester.

Gladstone's has become quite a dive and kinda frightening too.

A disppointed customer arriving at Moe's Tavern in Springfield (The Simpsons):

"Pshh.. This isn't a faux-dive... This place is a dive!"

Is that the place with the confederate flags out front?

If they're rockin' the Confederate flag, then I'll bet the stories you've heard are true.

I thought you had to drive to Arnold to see a bar with one of those. How sad.

That's been gone a couple years now.

^ Somehow I missed out on the place, yet I get the impression that its demise was probably a good thing.

Good karaoke, and you gotta love the blind lady who serves jell-o shots.

Aren't there a few dives along Gravois and Broadway that have Confederate flags hanging in the front windows?

I have never seen any. Broadway and Gravois do not even cross.

I never said the intersection of Broadway and Gravois.

There's one place on Gravois in South City that had a confederate flag. As you're going southwest on Gravois it's on the left about a 1/2 to 3/4 mile before Grand.

The place on Broadway is just south of the Lemp before the merge with Jefferson.

I think you're referring to the aforementioned One Nite Stand, corner of Gravois and Ohio, which has a confederate flag as part of its logo. Others here seem to think it ain't in business anymore.

I drive by it everyday and it appears to still be open. I've never been inside, but the awning on the outside was a Confederate flag. This awning was replaced with a plain green one a couple years ago.

it's still open, and the karaoke on fri and saturday nights is awesome. I always assumed it was too frightening/closed, but I was wrong. It's a real diverse crowd, too...and the bathrooms are clean! No 3am though, sadly.

Double D's Den on South Hampton is awesome...definitely within stumbling distance.

I've seen a confederate flag flying outside of a bar on South Broadway, near the new Lemay casino.

I have to add The Filling Station to the list. Across the street, diagonally a bit, from Venice Cafe. Mostly bikers. We used to go there to play pool when I lived in the neighborhood. Funniest was when yups trying to go to Venice found it too busy, so came over to TFS. They never stayed long.

Everyone has hear of Club 34 or Rosies in the West End. I'm talking "deep in the city streets", where you would never notice them.

I've been to Friendly's, definately a dive, though not as scary as you'd expect. The Houz quotient is pretty high though and it's only a 1 AM bar so no real reason to go unless you are under 21 - same for Nel's though it's a little houz-ier and a little scarier, too.

How about The Brick on Broadway? Now that is a scary dive bar.

I love Friendly's and go there all the time. Not sure what mcarril means by "it's only a 1 AM bar so no real reason to go unless you are under 21." I go because the beer is cheap, the food is cheap, and they have a woodstove outside that I like to sit near. Don't go to pick up girls though, not gonna happen. Go to get hammered. Clientele is a good mix of city hoosier and young city dwellers. Once saw two guys get in a fight over washers and a pregnant girl (smoking) try to break it up. The whole outside bar area stood up and starting chanting "jerry jerry jerry jerry" It was pretty awesome. The bartender threw everyone out and when we were leaving I saw one of the guys who had been in the fight walking back to the bar with a baseball bat.
