Belleville to get 7 new restaurants

Fast-food sites planned at developments

BY LAURA GIRRESCH

News-Democrat

BELLEVILLE --Mayor Mark Eckert announced Tuesday that the city will get at least seven new restaurants, including four in the Belleville Crossing shopping center off Illinois 15 and two at Green Mount Commons on Carlyle Avenue.

The new restaurants at Belleville Crossing will be Wendy's, Arby's, Qdoba Mexican Grill and Buffalo Wild Wings, and most should be open by the end of the year.

Also, there's a "strong lead" on a White Castle restaurant at that location, Eckert said.

There will be a Wendy's and a Hardee's opening at Green Mount Commons, near the new Wal-Mart Supercenter, by the end of the summer, Eckert said.

I know Greenmount Crossing, Collinsville Crossing, and Edwardsville Crossing, but where's Belleville Crossing?

It's at 15 and Frank Scott Pkwy West, near the new high school. A fairly typical suburban center with a Target. A BWW there would be a good addition.

I know most of these restaurants that are opening this year are mostly fast-food establishments but at least Belleville is trying to create more options in the city and trying to stop the bleeding of businesses and consumers to Fairview, O'Fallon and Shiloh. In the Belleville Crossing shopping center alone, there is still another 5 or 6 outparcels not accounted for and I expected more sit down restaurants to be annouced this year. As a side note, the Pasta House Co. has choosen not to rebuild in Fairview next to the mall ,and they are looking at other potential sites in the metro-east, maybe Belleville has as shot at luring them in.

This really isn't impressive at all. Some of those restaurants were already a mile west, down the road. Those closed down a while back, and now they're merely reopening them 1 mile to the east. Walmart, Wendy's, White Castle, and even South Western Illinois College (Formally Belleville Area College), were all previously located near the North Belt E / Carlyle Ave. intersection. Some of those buildings are sitting abandoned now. Everything else is already located just north, up Greenmount, near and in Greenmount Crossing, in Shiloh. Those establishments are Gamestop, Qdoba, Arby's, Buffolo Wild Wings, and Hardees .

Probably the most beneficial new establishment is Lowes. The closest one being in Fairview Heights.

Other than that, this is sprawl at its best.

It's a shame they couldn't take better advantage of the Metro Link Station.

Anyway, there was a more interesting article awhile back, about new establishments downtown.

Good news for the Metro East. More economic development.

We should be excited for Belleville to welcome the most generic of what suburbia has to offer?
