A security nightmare in what way? Keeping vandals away? I guess that's true.

It wouldn't be all that many more streets that would be added to downtown St. Louis.

The Rock House was actually disassembled and stored, and the Park Service intended to rebuild it after the Arch was finished (without the third-floor mansard roof, which was a later addition). Through the years, alas, the pieces were lost, along with the opportunity. There's a re-construction of one corner of the building in the museum in the basement of the Old Courthouse.
Do you happen to know if the Old Rockhouse business (music bar) on 7th and Hickory has ANY ties whatsoever to this building, or has it simply taken it's name? Their website suggest it's just borrowed the name.

The corner building of the new Old Rockhouse is a redbrick building, but the eastern portion is a literal rock house, which I imagine is why the owners of the business chose to borrow the name. But I'm unclear if it's truly a historic rock house or not.

The one thing that throws me is that their logo claims "Est. 1818." That drives me crazy because it's obviously not true. But what I'm not sure is if they're borrowing the building date of the REAL Old Rockhouse or if it's the building date of THEIR building.

None of this matters, it's just something I've wondered for a while.

^Here's a classic view of the Old Rock House in the late 1930s:

And here's a view of the new music venue:

They're clearly trying to re-create some of the feeling of the old place, including the signage over the doors. Other than that, I don't think there's any connection. Really, I don't see how there could be, after all these years.

Sorry about the clumsy links; I still can't figure out how to post pics directly.

Looks like a great new book coming out. I can't find any more info, though: publisher, size, price, etc.

^I finally found where to order this book. Looks like it was published by the Mercantile Library. Here's the order form:

The legs are 630 feet apart from each other - roughly a full city block. There isn't a single mansion in the St. Louis metro (or probably America) that you couldn't fit between the arch legs.
