^The thing that really surprised me was that the XFL game got more attention than the Blues. Sure, it's novel and there's lots of pent up football feels locally, but . . . um . . . there's a big Stanley Cup mock-up up above the bar. Right over the TV where the XFL game was showing. (One of about six.) Whereas the Blues were consigned to a single television on the opposite side. Someone missed the boat. You put a good (St. Louis) team on the field and there are clearly folks interested in football 'round about these parts. Anyway . . . go Battlehawks! (And Blues.)
The Blues game was the third in four days.

The BattleHawks made the list of the 136 weirdest pro and college football team names in history.  🙂

Banner Society - The 136 most XFL team names in football history

This also answers the question of why they didn't go with WarHawks - it was taken.

My absolute favorite name though is the Omaha Beef of the Champions Indoor Football League.  Very intimidating, especially if your opponents are vegans.  Apparently, they also have an all-male dance team called the Rump Roasters...  Keep Omaha Weird!

Enjoyed the game today.  Attendance stats have our home opener with the most ticket sales (29,554, just edging Seattle's 29,172.  Also, looking at stats online, that exceeds the Los Angeles Chargers avg attendance (25,393).  Several times the crowd cheered "Kroenke Sucks" and I was curious is this was audible on live TV.

It was and ESPN also transcribed it later in the day during sport center highlights.

I’ll be there Saturday with 4 others that couldn’t get tickets for today. If this team wins a few more in a row they can real pour some fuel on this and make it a pretty popular thing. Weather keeps getting better and if there is one thing all STL people like is big drunken out door events. Home tailgates will turn into big party for old timers and it will turn into a place to be for those 30 and under.

Even for the second-to-last home game, there are almost no affordable tickets available. There are a few $25 tickets (which come to $75 a pair with fees). I know some of the tickets were cheap months ago for those that had the ability to plan in advance. But it's minor league football, not something you should have to plan in advance.

I have no idea the financials for it, but the delay in opening up the upper deck is frustrating.  I would think we'd easily top 40k in attendance with the upper deck available.

I'm sure there are tons of people who'd like to attend at a reasonable price, which was one of the main supposed benefits of the XFL. Right now, isn't it about the same price as the Rams were?

My guess they don't believe it would be cost effective to open the upper deck.  You would have to hire staff for concessions, ushers, security and janitorial.
I remember reading the lease the XFL signed and the CVC gave absolutely nothing away.  So all those costs are the XFL.
I read in the post that they would reconsider opening upper deck after next Sundays game.   So that kinda hints at they are thinking about but
have to work out the logistics.

And what I have seen it is the 2nd deck they are considering opening, not the upper deck. I think some people are confusing the two. Would add about 6k seats.

I didn't realize that second deck/upper deck confusion.

The second deck is regular seating? I just assumed that was a suite level, like at Enterprise (and probably most arenas).

Short term it seems like they risk alienating fans when the prices are at the currently way-too-high levels. It's hard to grow the fanbase when you have no hope of attending a game for any price that I'd consider worth it for the quality of the league.

^I’ve seen both the second (suite) and upper (400) mentioned at different times. I really feel like if anything gets opened it will be the 400 level. The suite level was designed for a higher price point with bigger chairs and carpeted hallways. That’s aren’t even standing concession stands on that level as it was originally set side service. Besides, If they are trying to give the most fans a chance to experience the game for not an elevated price then the upper deck would be the way to go (30,000 seats vs 6000)

There are only 2 decks. Section 100, 200 and 300 in lower deck.
I believe 200 level was club, 300 was suites if my memory serves me correctly.

Yellow = Open now for Battlehawks games- 28,000 to 29,000 seats or so
Blue =  additional 5000-6000 seats that are in the "club" level that probably make sense opening up if there is demand
Red (excluding the inner ring 400 which is suites)= upper bowl- probably never be open for XFL games

This is correct and what I was talking about with the 2nd level. The 2nd level is the blue seats. This is what I have seen mentioned to be open. They already have some open for all inclusive and it wouldn't take the scale (staffing or otherwise) to open the rest as it would the 400 level. I also personally think 6k is about the right amount to try next to feel out where demand is.

EDIT - Searched online for historical tickets with prices listed, found a 8/8/2014 ticket in section 127 - 112.00
Another from 12/21/2014 in section 140 that was printed with a value of 145.00
These are individual tickets.  I do wonder if those you might be seeing are resale at a higher price?  KMOX reports this: https://kmox.radio.com/articles/news/ba ... s-averaged

Almost 21,000 tickets already sold for Saturday’s game.

XFLs goal 17-18,000 per game average for the season.

I'm surprised nobody in the media has mentioned it, but ESPN really screwed the pooch on the home opener broadcast.  The Cincinnati - Wichita State basketball game ran long, they didn't switch over and instead put the XFL game on ESPNews.  So TV viewers missed the whole "first pro football game in 5 years" intro, shots of the Dome crowd and exterior shots of crazed fans, plus the entire opening drive and first home touchdown ever by the BattleHawks...

^If they can keep selling 29K starting at $25 I think they'll be pretty darn happy. And yeah, I don't eve recall hearing of Rams tickets for much of anything below $75 face value in the nosebleed section, so I think this is still a whale of a lot cheaper. And the rest of us pedestrians . . . can join the screaming at Amsterdam or some other local sports bar. :)

Also an interesting annecdotal tidbit: a close friend of my mother's is the son of a local NFL star, and his own son also played division I college ball. (Walked on on granddad's name. And got time on the field in some modestly big games I believe.) So he's a DEEPLY committed football fan from both sides. And he's entirely on board with the Battlehawks. Makes me believe dad probably is too. And son, most likely. This may not mean much, but at least to me it gives them some serious cred. Go Battlehawks!

If the STL team does 25,000 a game or 125,000 in a season, average ticket is closer to $40 or $5,000,000. That should cover player expenses and maybe most some of the coaching staff. Of course there are many other costs like $100,000/game for done + staffing.

If this thing makes it to year 3 and beyond I can see them doubling the teams to 16 and also raise $ by offering local ownership buy in, kinda like MLS, where the league still owns the teams but local ownership buys shares in the league.

Agreed.  I went Downtown on the Saturday before the game to get a Lumiere Trop card..  If you get a Trop card (free to do so), you can park FREE in the casino lot on game days.  It's $60 to park there without the card.

Anyway, I couldn't believe the number of people walking around DownTown on Saturday -- and this just wasn't around BPV.  Washington Ave had plenty of foot traffic and people were in the restaurants.  NOT everyone was there for Mardi Gras either.
The casino was busy too.

Sunday didn't have as much traffic, but there were still peeps all around. My party and I wanted to eat breakfast at Chris' on Tucker, but it was over an hour wait.  We went to the casino buffet instead, right as it opened.  The casino was already busy and this was three hours before game time -- mostly an older crowd, who appeared to be "the regulars", but there were a number of folks wearing BattleHawks gear. The tailgate in Baer Park was packed with people 90 minutes before game time.

The announced attendance at the game was 29,500 + people, but I can tell you there were well over 30,000 people in Downtown on Sunday. Several parking lots had major tailgate parties in them and I heard that BPV was packed too.

In all, it was a GREAT weekend for The Lou.  We ARE on the rebound.

The secondary market prices for the BattleHawks are equal to higher than they were the last few years of the Rams.

Face value is moot for the BattleHawks when everything is sold months in advance. And it was mostly moot for the Rams for single-game sales.

The average secondary market price for the Rams' last game here was $62. That's probably about average for the last several years of Rams.

Just posted on Fb from 101 ESPN, Kurt talking about what the team needs to see in attendance in order for them to open up the upper deck, or at least part of it for the upcoming LA game.  Basically, the magic number is 25,000 and they've already sold nearly 21,000 tickets now.

Kurt's interview begins around the 15 minute mark.
