Barnes-Jewish plans new $45 million nursing school

Lisa R. Brown

Barnes-Jewish Hospital has property adjacent to the Washington University Medical School campus on Kingshighway under contract for a new facility for the Barnes-Jewish College of Nursing and Allied Health.

Sources say the project is estimated to cost $45 million.

Barnes-Jewish has the property at 4483 Duncan under contract from Dazor Manufacturing, said Dazor President Stan Hogrebe. "They approached us this past spring," Hogrebe said. "The sale isn't finalized until March 11, 2006, which was negotiated to give us time to move." Dazor, which makes lighting and magnification products, has had its headquarters at the site since 1938.

Now the next step is finding 30,000 sq ft for Dazor to move into to keep them in the city. Is anyone at city hall listening?

I wish they were. But alas, i am sure that Dazor will be lost in the name of "progress." Whats the saying? two steps forward; one step back?

This calls back to the day of segregation when a medical college teaching doctors, surgens, and nurses operated alongside Homer G. Phillips Hospital in the Ville. Wow, If only I had been born decades before 1985 and been able to see the strength that existed in the Ville. This relates to BJC and a nursing college since Homer G. Phillps had an integral relationship in training nurses for its institution and others like what BJC does.

Looks like this project may be getting started, I went by there Friday and saw crews putting up a construction fence around the property.

SMS,

What does this have to do with Homer G Phillips? Are you saying that the medical college did not allow its students to work with Homer G doctors? Is this occuring at Barnes? Please explain.

Homer G had some of the best residency programs for African-Americans in the country, and trained a good chunk of the older black physicians who are now in their 70's or so. We've had a few come speak to us. They had a partnership with Wash U. The program started going downhill when Barnes was integrated.

Uh, I think you might want to clarify this statement, Doc.

^ Seems clear to me... Wash U pulled their funding from Homer G and abandoned the partership. Not so much a good or bad, but sad to hear.

No, it didn't have anything to do with pulling funding. With many quality options for Black physicians to do their training, Homer G. just lost a large part of what made them special. It went from THE place for the top Black medical students to just another city hospital, with an aging building and inconsistant support from the City. Nevertheless, it was still a quality institution when the City closed it back in the 80's. I've heard a few people who lived in the Ville say that they still feel betrayed by that decision. On the bright side, I hear it's a pretty nice retirement home now. At least they're using that cool old building.

Demolition has started in earnest on the west side of the building. I'll try to get over there with a camera sometime over the next couple of days.

Wow, I like it. It seems like that atrium is definitely taking some design elements from the medical school's new learning and teaching center.

Not too bad looking...nothing ground-breaking, but nicely done. It really ties in with the other more recent buildings in the complex. They've obviously got a campus-thing going.

Thumbs up!

BJC doesn't mess around.

I happen to really like the design. It's simple, but sleek and modern looking. I think it will fit in with the whole complex in that area quite well. I really like what BJC has done with that area a lot. A lot of parking, but some really nice buildings.

Looks like the new Barnes College of Nursing is nearing completion. It looks like a great addition to the WUMC/Cortex corridor. Now let's build on a few of the parking lots.

Nice. It went up quick, and looks nice. More density in that already dense area.

I hope the strip mall in the top of the last pic goes soon. It would be a great place for 1st floor retail with residential/office on top - put the building up to the street and have parking behind on the first level.
