ONE HUNDRED CREATIVE CITIZENS

Call for 100 creative people.

One hundred creative people in one place at one time can create a new world.  This year the Black Rock Arts Foundation, from the people who bring you Burning Man, awarded grants to six art projects around the world. One in New York, one in Los Angeles, one in San Francisco, one in London, one in Beijing and one in St. Louis.  Yes, this St. Louis. Yes, this project.

Come be a part of this project.

CALL TO ARTISTS

On the weekend that the rest of America celebrates Columbus Day

we will be celebrating the discovery of a new world.

In the spirit of rediscovery and recovery a new world will be founded

on the banks of the Mississippi River. We need one hundred people to help create it. On the cobblestones nestled between the arch and the ever-changing river a new world of creative freedom will be formed.

That world will be Artica.

October 10, 11 and 12 a society of radical self-expression and creativity

will exist without the normal restrictions. No permits, fees, or licenses

needed for busking, performing or making art within the Artica city limits.

Take the opportunity to create art by the Arch and present it to the world.

Watch the full moon rise up from the river and the sun set on the city.

Be part of the Boat of Dreams parade.

Create a circus of rapture! A carnival of dreams! A festival of the

imagination! You can make this world whatever you want it to be!

(No art installations may be taller than the arch and safety restrictions

apply)  Parades! Video! Music! Dance! Create! Celebrate! Participate!

St. Louis is the creative center of the universe. St. Louis has 100 creative citizens.

Are you one of them?

How you would demonstrate it?

The Riverfront doesn't need another museum. It needs to be brought to life! I've spoken about this in other threads, but around amazing monuments and plazas in Europe, street performers and art abound. Why are the Arch Grounds so sterile and blah? Too many boring and unimaginative people, I say.

These artists are on to something. Someone tell this to whatever group is in power of Arch Grounds improvement.

Yes, but it is titled "artica: the urban wilderness art festival". St. Louis is certainly high on any list that ranks cities by "urban wilderness". :P

How do we know if he's bald when he is wearing an orange cowboy hat? Is this north of the landing? Have we had this before? I have wandered up that way near the start of the riverfront trail and there seemed to be lots of remnants of installation art....

Yeah, Artica's been around for a few years. It tries to be "underground art", so most poeple have never heard of it.

Actually, it tries to be community driven art, and the community tends to not be very driven. Or, at least driven towards other eds. Being underground is an unfortunate side effect, not a prerequisite. As one of the founding artists, I can say I've been through my own ups and downs of involvement. I think this year will be particularly interesting, though.

I, apparently, needed some clarification myself this weekend while trying to join them for the site visit. It has apparently moved to South of the Arch grounds. I and the wife went looking for folks at the old site, North of the Arch & Landing. No one there. I talked with one of the organizers afterwards, and it has apparently moved.

I'm looking forward to it!

We did stumble across the biker bar that's on N. Jefferson. That place is going crazy, and looks pretty freakin' cool. I'm gonna have to go back, get some pics of it (and the Moto Museum), and convince my Harley riding aunt to visit from California.

If this thing trespasses on private land without permission, I'll call the police and have it shut down.

This is tomorrow! 8)

Artica is an outdoor multi-media art festival, parade and workshop series developed to provide the people of the St. Louis metropolitan area with the opportunity to come together as a community through creative self-expression.

The event takes place along the Mississippi riverfront in order to revitalize an area that has been polluted, neglected and abandoned for far too long. Although our audience is primarily all of the citizens of the St. Louis metropolitan area, the whole world is invited to attend and expected to participate as co-creators during the festival.

Artica’s development is as fluid as the river it celebrates, and its scope depends greatly upon the involvement of the community.

Artica will happen on the St. Louis riverfront between the Arch and the water, north of the Poplar Street Bridge, and south of, and upon the riverfront main stage.

Artica will take place on October 11 & 12 (Saturday and Sunday), 2008.

For up to the minute Artica developments refer to http://articafest.ning.com

IMPORTANT ARTICA RULES AND INFORMATION

Artica is a participatory art festival.

We want people to create art and create responsibly.

We are new guests in this neighborhood and would like to be allowed to come back again.

Numerous city departments and officials

have allowed us to create this very edgy festival on a very public site

because of our past history of responsibility.

Please behave accordingly and encourage other participants to follow your example.

PARKING

Parking is available on the levee, and an artists/performers parking zone will be established

but you can park where ever is convenient for you. The parking authority may or may not

charge you about $4 to park on the levee. Sometimes they’re there, sometimes they’re not.

It’s out of our control and you’re on you own. People often park on Leonor K. Sullivan Boulevard.

Sometimes they give you tickets or tow your car, sometimes they don’t. Again it’s out of our control.

There is also the arch parking garage on Washington Avenue.

CAMPING

Camping will be available for artists on the levee, with an encampment zone

next to the artist parking zone. Be aware that the levee is slanted and cobblestone.

DRINKING ALCOHOL

The official policy is that you must be 21 and drinking acohol in public is illegal

and Artica supports the law of the land.

Also, remember that Artica also supports self-reliance, so be prepared to

take care of your own needs. Don’t do anything stupid and be responsible.

FOOD AND COOKING

Artica will not be vending or providing any food or beverages.

There is some available from private vendors on the levee.

You are welcome to bring your own and welcome to share.

This festival stresses self-reliance and leave no trace.

Bring what you want and need and take it and all your trash

with you when you leave. This is part of our responsibility to

the city and port authority for letting us use this public venue.

All cooking must be in a raised grill or a

designated cooking fire that has an offical fire permit.

There will be no cooking/camp/ceremonial fires without a permit.

There are several designated burn barrels and cooking fire locations

with official permits for these purposes. Ask a docent where they are.

DOCENTS

There will be docents/rangers/guides happy to answer any of your questions.

FLEXIBILITY

Be fluid like the river.

WE HAVE NOTHING TO FUN BUT FUN ITSELF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OK I went Saturday afternoon. It seemed very lame. Essentially a bunch of hippies with drum circles. But it could have been better at night. Was anyone there at night?
