BELLEVILLE --Art lovers were out in force and buying their favorite pieces at the seventh annual Art on the Square on Saturday.
The art fair downtown offers something from just about every art medium available: Jewelry, sculpture, oils, pencil, photographs, glasswork, carvings and more.
"There are so many different approaches here, so many different things," said artist M. Shawn Cornell. "There is a variety of artists, a little bit of everything, and I think that is their goal here."
The show features 112 artists from 30 states, Germany, England, Israel and Belgium, and this year, boasts a ranking of No. 1 in the nation. It was given that title, which is based on total sales, by Art Fair SourceBook after the show last year.
Cornell, of St. Louis, is an en plein air artist formerly from Lebanon.
In this medium, he paints scenery as he is standing there looking at it. The paintings in his booth were of local scenes and familiar locations. Each painting had a card describing when it was painted, where, what the weather was like and other details to personalize the painting.
He had a very good day Saturday, better than he had expected.
"I'm devastated," he said with a smile. "All my favorite paintings have been sold, and I'm missing them already."
Cornell came to the fair with 37 paintings. By Saturday afternoon he was down to 12.
"When you are accepted (to Art on the Square) it's exciting," he said. "When you're not, it's very disappointing."
Jewelry artist Caroline Viene of Seattle was busy showing her jewelry to potential buyers and selling her pieces at a steady pace.
