Arch Grounds Bison Paddock

Has anyone floated the idea of having a bison paddock in the arch grounds or on the east side of the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial?

The Bison Paddock in Golden Gate Park is a very popular destination in San Francisco, and I think it could be a major draw alongside the Arch. Similar to the Botanical Garden's maintenance of City Garden, the St. Louis Zoo could care for the animals (which is a similar arrangement to the one they have in San Francisco). This would also be an opportunity to increase awareness of the St. Louis Zoo among Arch tourists.

I like the Wetland Reserve idea that MVVA has proposed and the Mound idea that Foster+Partners proposed, but I think Bison have a much wider appeal and a much more logical connection to westward expansion. Also, they don't have to be mutually exclusive, obviously the Mississippi flyway birds could coexist with a small heard of bison as they did for millennia before we showed up. The Bison Paddock in Golden Gate Park was 7 acres and in the last few years has been expanded to 12 acres. The Arch Grounds on the Missouri side are about 62 acres, and there is much more land on the East Side that could be used as a paddock.

I think this could be a dynamic complimentary element of the Arch Grounds, which would bring to life an important part of American national expansion, and bring attention to another one of St. Louis' great cultural assets, the St. Louis Zoo.

Hey, if the National Park Service actually takes over Grant's Farm, it's a slam dunk!

I like this idea. I could imagine people with binoculars trying to spot buffalo on the far bank. It would draw people from the West side and has a strong tie to Westward expansion. I don't think many people will be drawn to see wetlands alone, at least not more than once -- especially during mosquito season.

I like it too - as Moorlander noted, the obvious partner would be Lone Elk Park - an STL County park with a bison herd.

This brings up a larger point - STL has a great botanical garden and zoo, incredible other amenities in the world bird sanctuary, Lone Elk Park, sculpture parks, the Butterfly House (admin by MOBOT) and more. Either the Arch grounds needs something we don't already have, or a huge effort should be made to highlight what we do have. The Bison heard on the east side would be awesome.

That's a great idea. I don't have anything else to add to the thread, but I really like it.

Making the new aviary a shared project between the zoo and mobot would be a good case for ZMD expansion... :D

Well how convenient that we actually have a farm with animals that needs taking over. I do not know about having something at the Arch, but Grant's Farm needs a takeover and revamp! I haven't been out there in years, but I am sure that they could do something with the idea that you have and incorporate Grant's farm versus the Zoo.

Gosh, I wish someone over at AB (I don't wanna add InBev, lol) would see this through...The list of benefits for other regional institutions is strong, but...

As a memorial to Westward expansion, how 'udderly' amazing would it be to actually enter some of the natural environment that these Americans faced...

Not sure of the actual viability of the ground there given the industrial use of the land, but gosh how cool would this be?

Just to get the shot of grazing bison with the Arch and downtown skyline behind them with some slogan about experiencing American westward expansion history and the gem of a city that helped lauch it would be worth it IMO...

Maybe a Ted's Montana Grill on the Landing too? Watch the beasties graze, then eat'em...lol

On another board someone mentioned what a great idea it would be to have a prairie dog city right next to the beer garden. I would never want to leave.

^I believe there is a curfew at the Memorial...

I actually think a prairie dog city is a good idea...for historical reasons...as an attraction (kids love crap like that)...if something like that were possible, I'm sure those buggers would get named and followed locally...

Central Park in NYC is wonderful because in the span of 10 minutes you can be in two different worlds...Hopefully the same effect will take place here in St. Louis...

This really is an incredible idea. As with other though, it wouldn't fit the NPS's idea of preserving the Arch grounds as is. Of course it appears that a beer garden etc. may be on the way so who knows. Seriously, I've heard more fun, good ideas on this forum and in casual conversations than I've seen from the designs - though I'm sure I'm just overlooking why they aren't f'ing "feasible".

Unfortunately, you can't visit a really cool drawing, alex...lol

I am very anxious to see what MVVA brings to the table at the first of the year...I've been to the Brooklyn Bridge Park (MVVA's handiwork) and its both practical and aesthetically pleasing...And somehow navigated the 5 borrough polictical system...

This idea is not without some precedent. In the 1950s, when the JNEM site was cleared but before Arch construction began, several rodeos were held on the JNEM site.

Reading old threads, what a great idea.
