EDWARDSVILLE - Amazon appears to be coming to Madison County, but Madison County Chairman Alan Dunstan wanted to be clear he is still waiting on the company to make an official announcement.

Talk surfaced intensely in recent days that the Seattle-based company will utilize one warehouse with 500 to 600 employees. It has been speculated for several weeks that Amazon would locate here in the new Lakeview Commerce Center warehouse area.

“I want Amazon to announce it,” Dunstan said. “I would love to have Amazon in Madison County. There will be a lot of good-paying jobs if they come here.”

Dunstan said he has heard that Amazon has been advertising for jobs at what would be the new center. Building permits also have apparently been taken out in Amazon’s name.

The county chairman said he is excited about what the new Lakeview Commerce Center warehouse area will add to the already bustling Gateway Commerce Center for the region. He said the area has developed a nationwide reputation for its distribution centers.

^ Would not be surprising. Amazon frequently locates 2 to 3 of their distribution centers either adjacent or in very close proximity to each other.

Any specifics on warehouse sites? Curious to see where that fits in with the Gateway East images you posted in the threads 'formative years.'

With or without the NGIA decision it was a bitter sweat day for downstate IL. Amazon made a business decision that made sense for its ledger and the immensely successful Metro East Gateway Center. A nice pickup.

At same time, not specific to Metro East, but downstate none the less was Exelon announcing the closure of two nuclear plants and impacts on 1500 jobs on top of Dynegy idling coal fired plants. 1500 Nuclear power plant jobs that assume are very well paying compared to Amzaon's fulfillment centers. Illinois deregulated electricity pricing has benefitted consumers but talk about a hit to power generation and the jobs associated with it while Missouri power plants chug along.

Does anyone lament the loss of some of the highest yielding arable farmland in the world? I mean, I totally get why that shipping/warehousing center is where it is, but seems like a brownfield site like the old coke site in south city would've been a better land use.

I'd guess the farmers that are suffering terribly with ultra-low commodity prices wouldn't be super-sad to sell their land to a willing and able buyer

Reducing the diversity of our electrical energy sources is concerning. Natural gas is cheap now, but it'll be a double wammy if it goes up and electricity and gas for heating impact people.

Yes. and there's space in East St. Louis closer to people who really need jobs.

Looks like one at least one of the buildings is already built.
