Anyone know how the WS Hotel over at Fourth and Washington is doing these days? I work right around there, and it never seems to have much traffic. My wife and I spent the night there one night last year and loved the room. The building has a cool atmosphere. Recently, I had lunch at the restaurant there (Sidney's, I think) and was unimpressed with the service and moderately impressed with the food. Sadly, we were the only ones in there the whole lunch hour. I know they are selling some of the rooms as condos but hadn't heard how successful they've been with that.

The problem with WS is not location, quality of the hotel, and certainly not vision. The problem is management.

RFT recently had an article on the guy that developed that hotel. ( http://riverfronttimes.com/issues/2004- ... ature.html ) He is one of these guys with a lot of vision, a lot of guts, and a self destructive personality. Kinda like Blake Brokaw (Tangarine, Hungry Buddha, Lo, Chocolate bar and others), but Stallings is more sleazy.

WS has an enormous amount of untapped potential. The space is obviously very beautiful, but they sorely need management who know what the hell they're doing.

In the past couple of years, I've gone there and found a Sushi Lounge with drinks one night, a Cuban menu with a Frank Sinatra wanna be singer another night, and then who knows what's going on there now.

That location could use a very classy, mature nightlife option in addition to the botique hotel (that would be thriving with proper management). However, I don't know what will happen there in the short term.

Where did you see this? I would like more information regarding the condos. They had been a hotel and extended stay apartments... that is all their website lists also. Let me know about the condo info if you could.

I thought I had heard they were selling some as well. I think they might even have a sign on the side of the building on Washington...

I too have heard that. There was even an article in the Post a couple of years back.

I just received an email from someone at WS Hotel (they didn't sign their name), and the response was:

No we do not have any units for sale

So if anyone can dig up anything contrary to that, I would still like to see it. Thanks!

I guess they gave up on selling them. I know there was an article in the post saying they were going to sell units, but I guess that stalled when the owner went to jail. I wonder how the hotel occupancy is doing. Does the mystery emailer have any info on that?

About 3-4 months ago, there were units listed on Realtor.com. They were about $160,000 for a 1Br/1Ba to $250,000 for a 2Br/2Ba. They looked pretty nice in the pictures, but they still kind of looked like hotel units. I checked and they're not listed anymore.

The WS is one of those places that you just can't quite put your finger on what's going on. It's a very strange place. Weird vibe.

And yes they were trying to sell units. They had a huge banner on the backside of the building for months.

(KSDK/SLBJ) -- The St. Louis Business Journal reported in its Oct. 7 issue that the WS Hotel downtown is on the market, three years after William Stallings Jr. spent millions to open the upscale boutique hotel.

Its current owner, Western United Life Assurance Co., is listing the property for $11 million. Western United took ownership of the building through foreclosure last fall.

I'm sorry, I've been through the building and I thought it was the cheapest "remodeling" out of any building I've seen downtown. Drop ceilings in hotel rooms? Carol House furniture you'd see in O'Fallon.. I thought it looked awful.
