Vote for Missouri's new license plate to be released in 2009: http://dory.dor.mo.gov/dor/voteplate/

- My fave is ribbon because it looks clean and stylish.

- Reflection reminds me of an orange and the ocean.. Shouldn't that be Florida's plate? :P

- Bluebird looks a lot like our current plate and what's with the bluebird? Even if it's the state bird, it doesn't make me think of Missouri...

Went with Bluebird. Tis the only one with MO map.

I chose the ribbon one is reminiscient of the rivers.

I guarantee you that if you asked every st. louisan what the state bird is, less than 500 would respond 'the bluebird'. Everyone else would say Cardinal. I've never even seen a bluebird - so how the hell is it our state bird!

Why not put the Dogwood tree instead?

Why settle for the dogwood or the bluebird -- since we commissioned such a nice state song, why not put the Missouri Waltz on the plates. It could be a little audio recording or something. :P

Ok, silliness aside, I'm not real crazy about any of these choices. Why such a monochrome look? Blue and white? Can't we do 3 colors?

I'm not excited about any of them. Can we have the old red and white ones back?

none of them are that great, they are all rather plain and bland IMO. :?

I would like to know what idiot is responsible for selecting the choices. I think every single one these is ugly and bland. They put a bird on it instead of the Arch? Who associates Missouri with a bird? The other two are generic and uninspired. I know it's just a license plate but come on. These all look awful.

The ribbon is the best choice, IMO. I like the simplicity. I didn't vote for the one with the sun because I figured Florida should do something like that. The one with the redbird did nothing for me. Illinois would probably like it though, if the MO state were removed.

That's pretty much what I thought as well. Can't we do better?

Overall, I think it's time to go back to the drawing boards. We can do better.

The current license plates may not win awards for beauty or originality, but I do like the white/blue/green color fade. I prefer simple, uncluttered plates like those from California and Minnesota to busy and cluttered plates like those from Texas, Indiana, and Tennessee. However, I don't like the cheesy graphics, the font choices, or the lack of color on the three choices we've been offered.

I don't like the bluebird plate, because the bluebird looks silly at the bottom, and state outlines on plates are boring and somewhat played out. The Show-Me State slogan on the RH side of the plate looks absolutely ridiculous. The reflection plate seems silly- we're not known for abundant sunshine. The ribbon plate works the best IMHO, although I don't like the font of the state name or the lack of color at the bottom. I suppose the ribbon represents our rivers and streams, just like the (equally abstract) squiggly line on the current license plate.

A simple solution would be to use the logo for the Missouri Division of Tourism at the top of the plate...IMHO it's a better representation of our state's rivers and streams than the current plate or the proposed ribbon plate...

Two more things: I hope the numbers and letters will still be embossed on the 2009 plates, because I think the screened-on characters used by many other states (and by Missouri on personalized plates) look cheap. Also, it looks like renewal stickers are being moved to the plate corners again, which seems optimistic since thieves have made a habit of cutting the corners of plates to steal renewal stickers (that's why the state moved them back to the plate center a few years ago, where they were located on the maroon plates which were first issued in 1979 and phased out in 1997).

Of the three, the ribbon, less artwork intruding with the plate number.

I'd return to old-style raised-block lettering with no decorative art. Dark raised letters against a reflective white sheet. (Safer than the old white on brown.)

+1

I hate all the plates they've put forward for a vote. I don't want someone elses lame artwork on my vehicle. Europeans have it right- white plate, black numbers and letters.

314, great call on using the tourism logo! It's attractive, and it actually signifies something Missouri is known for. Why re-invent the wheel when this art already exists? Moreover, the navy / light blue / white color scheme could be attractive on our plates.

^ Could that design be scaled and integrated into the plate to make it look good? I agree, that design looks nice...

All three are boring, uninspired trash. I think we should go to what Europe does as well. A plate is a necessary function, don't make it more than it needs to be.

The old black and yellow vanity plates were the best. I don't want any stupid artwork on my license plate. It's a license plate. It's the colors that make the difference.

I only care about the placement of the tags - they need to be hard to steal!

That's my main concern, because I've had my license plates cut twice in the last year so thieves could liberate the renewal stickers/tabs. (The last time was a Christmas gift- it happened on Christmas Eve when I was shopping in the ghetto known as Crestwood!) I just got around to replacing them a couple of weeks ago because I had to renew my plates this month anyway.

The same thing happened to me a few times when the DMV used to put renewal stickers on the bottom corners of the plates. That said, I prefer the newer plates with the recessed space in the center because it's still a bit more difficult for thieves to slice the plate in half, although my experience proves it's still possible, unfortunately. It seems like use of a heavier metal would do the trick.

FWIW, I think the ribbon design plate is the least of the three evils, so that's what I chose in the poll.

Finally, I'll share a best kept secret (at least for now): Usually, the South Kingshighway DMV office is a nuthouse. But on my last visit, I went at 9:00 on a Saturday morning, pulled into an empty parking lot, walked right in, and walked right out with my new plates. Apparently there are a lot of people that don't know this DMV is open on Saturday mornings now?
