Yeah, I was about to say, public opinion is that this year was better than last year’s disaster.

No damage nor shootings = successful 4th of July.
And SLMPD is playing loose with “arrested”, more appropriate term would have been “detained” until parents came to pick up and a fine issued to parents.

I have social media. It still looked like a madhouse.

I don’t know what else the city is supposed to do to prevent that besides detain a bunch of kids and take the fireworks and guns. That’s what they did.

Curfew would be a good start

I’m not sure that really has an effect, but I guess it could be tried. A lot of the issues started pretty early, at like 6pm.

I don’t think a curfew would deter anyone based on their behavior and it just results in the same thing that already happened. Kids getting detained and having to get picked up by their parents.

It would start it earlier for DT. Maybe 5. And sure it allows the cops to detain for merely being there without supervision.

That’s awfully heavy handed though. So a 16 year old kid can’t walk around downtown in broad daylight without getting detained even if they aren’t doing anything wrong?

I think social media blows things out of proportion.  I saw discouraging things, yes.  I a have also seen posts (not from this weekend) that claim actions are happening in Tower Grove park, when the park is clearly NOT Tower Grove Park, and users called it out as a park in North County.  So, we must not forget social media, especially those that are wanting you to follow them, are shopping for likes, reactions etc to pad their pockets.  That is the real "fake news".

Get used to it or not
On Monday, heavily armed ICE agents conducted a raid at MacArthur Park (LA CA) that targeted children. Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass confronted the agents and demanded they leave.

This is kinda my view. You can go buy infinite fireworks as soon as you leave STL County and we know how easy it is to get a gun, especially outside of the city. Not much the city can do to stop the chaos when literally everyone outside of the city is fueling it.

Walk around- without a parent or guardian.

Right. Teenagers should be allowed to walk around downtown when they are following the law in the middle of the day without a guardian.

Different story at 3am when there are no parks or business open that they could patronize.

I'm saying the rule during 4th of July should be after 5 PM or something, no one under 18 can be walking around downtown without a parent or guardian. Yes, even in "daylight", to get a head start on controlling madness. Would probably be done in the form of a curfew.

Governor, St. Louis business execs laud new downtown entertainment district

“That’s the only mission I have, to get this going so the rest of the state feels that ripple effect of that economic growth and vibrancy,” Kehoe said at the signing at Union Station in Downtown West.

https://www.stltoday.com/news/local/gov ... 893cd.html

An "entertainment district" is defined as an area located in the city of St. Louis, within the area locally known as the city's downtown or central business district, which contains a minimum of one hundred acres and a combination of entertainment venues, including, but not limited to, arenas, amusement centers, auditoriums, athletic facilities, bars, hotels, concert halls, convention facilities, music venues, nightclubs, restaurants, and other entertainment facilities.

The act provides that any district which is an entertainment district shall have the power to hire and train public safety personnel to enforce the laws of the state, municipality, and the district, including laws relating to curfews, unaccompanied minors, public spaces, the operation of motor vehicles, and other public safety matters. Entertainment districts shall not have the power to impose any tax.

The term of state appropriations under any such agreement shall not exceed twenty-seven years, and the annual amount of the state appropriation authorized under the act shall not exceed $2.5 million per year for any fiscal year ending on or before June 30, 2031, and $4.5 million per year for any fiscal year thereafter. No such appropriation shall be made prior to July 1, 2026.

Any promotion, development, and support of entertainment tourism shall be determined to produce a positive net fiscal impact for the state over the term of the agreement, with such public or private assurances as the Department may reasonably require.

It would be so easy for the state to actually boost downtown STL and create a real ripple effect and it starts with not moving the state offices out of downtown and making it easier for developers to build, in particular, redeveloping massive office buildings.

This will probably just funnel more money to City's Finest, which is fine, but it's mostly just virtue signaling.

Went to the Cardinals game today for the first time in probably a couple years. I have two young kids, reason why it’s been awhile, so this was their first game. We parked in the garage at pine and 7th. The new bike lanes looked nice but that stretch from when you leave ballpark village to Olive is rough looking, besides Keiner and Peabody, especially with hooters closed. And Peabody is a bit rough at the moment just due to the construction scaffolding. I’d love to see that stretch figured out sooner than later.

Is there a plan for wainwright? I can’t remember if it fell thru or not and that macys garage has to come down, I didn’t realize how much of an eyesore it is now

Wainwright was sold to Greater St. Louis Inc and I believe the city is doing or is planning on doing a RFP for it, with the ask being housing of some kind.

The old garage is slated for demolition, city owns it now.
