A manuscript museum with what appears traveling exhibits set to open in the old church at 3524 Russell - it sounds pretty cool-

Huge four alarm fire tonight. I hope it isn't as damaging as it appears.

I hope that most of these valuable documents were stored in fireproof cabinets and containers. Most are likely fragile and need to be away from the elements. I commend the STLFD for having the wherewithal to save as many artifacts as possible. Great job as usual!

Anyone here what the extent of the damage was to the building and how many artifacts may be lost?

Sounds like most of the documents and artifacts are OK, but the building itself may be a total loss:

Hoping that at least the shell can be preserved. Who knows, maybe it presents an interesting opportunity for a modern building constructed inside the existing shell?

P-D and others are now reporting that everything was able to be saved. City says the building is structurally sound and could be rehabbed, just depends on whether or not the owner wants to undertake it and the likely very high cost. I like stlgasm's idea, save the shell and build like a large glass building inside it to house the museum.

Maybe something like the newly renovated library at Shaw's Garden only on a larger scale:

^ Would love to see something like that for this building. Really should be saved if at all possible, and preferably blended with a modern design aspect if practical.

^Having been in Columbia too long there's a little part of me that wants to say "This is how you get columns," but I think we can all agree it would be great if they could save it and put a modern (fireproof) building inside the shell of the old. Finally, something we can all agree on! (I hope.)

There is a banner of the front from a clean up/restoration company on the front of the building which is a good sign. My guess is the insurance co will have the final say but it looks like the exterior walls are fine

Does anyone know the fate of this building? I drove by the other
day & noticed the rear is still very damaged. Just curious.....

Someone on Nextdoor reported there was a "For Sale" sign up several months ago.  Do not know the outcome of that.

I wonder if the Museum itself will find a new location locally or not. I admit I didn’t know much about it until the fire but I would like to check out the items they had on display.

Good news, pending zoning approval this is slated for multi family housing.

Fantastic news!

I like going by the Compton Hill Water Tower Park from time to time with my pooch, but I'm always longing for the building to find a new purpose.

Should be a great spot for multi-family.

This could be one of the coolest residential buildings in the City if done right.

Was about to ask if there was any news on this building; great news about the residential rezoning. Hopefully the building gets the love it needs and deserves sooner rather than later.

I was holding out hope that the museum itself would rebuild and return.

I love this building in Boston and really hope we can see something similar in St. Louis with one of our vacant churches or buildings.

Why not with this one?

I'm sure some would hate it there, but I think it would be so neat.
