thought some of you might be interested to know that google earth has finally updated it's satellite imagery of the st. louis region! the images look have been taken this summer. the ubiquitous google maps has yet to follow suit, though it hopefully can't be far behind. the new images show the city looking much nicer than the older ones, which seemed to have been taken in late fall or winter and made much of the city look barren, dead, and rather depressing. i don't have any screen shots to post, but you can download the program for free if you like!

^I noticed that yesterday. The old photos didn't even show New Busch under construction. Now we can look at the hole that is Ballpark Village. Hopefully the next time they're updated the hole is no longer there.

Any idea where we are at on the list to get streetview? Indy, Detroit, Pittsburgh, Minneapolis, and Denver all have it already. But, they are still missing some other major cities that might be before us like DC/Baltimore, Atlanta, Seattle... so we may be down the list a ways. Anyway, I am looking forward to seeing it.
In Indy, they did Indy like normal, but then also went out and did all the surrounding smaller cities. Bloomington, Terre Haute, Lafayette, Muncie, Columbus, etc. all also had their streetviews done at the same time as Indy. I would love if they did the same thing for the Saint Louis area.

Good to see Forest Park after the renovation - though I can see why it's better to have the pics taken in early spring when the trees don't interfere.
I was wondering if the images were ever going to be updated. Good to see.
Its about time..... The time of day and year does wonders for making the city look better.... The only downside to the intensity of the green grass is you can really see how many empty lots are just north of down town...
Speaking of which, whats with the football field sized empty lots just north of MLK dr. and 16th street.... Find that cluster of fields and then look at all of the surface parking between there and the convention center.....Could you imagine if all of those lots had towers on them.......wow.....

WOW.... just turned on the 3d function.... there is TON more detail.. including the Adams Mark Logo on the East facade.... Although I am a little confused why the matching parking garages (the ones above Hooters, I dont remember what they are called) are detailed out and, oh say.... the WAINRIGHT building is not..... although I am particularily impressed with the amount of detail on Union Station....
As of this morning, it appears the updated images have made their way over to http://maps.google.com

FWIW, I'd guess the imagery was taken memorial day weekend - it appears it captured people setting up the Shakespeare in the Park festival:

And I'd guess it's early morning - there's some fairy long shadows leaning westward, and the parking lot at the zoo is nearly empty.
You can see a few people on the field at the new Busch - it looks like they could be prepping for a game, and that'd fit my timeframe guess - they were in the midst of a 6-game homestand that weekend, though they flew to Colorodo on Memorial day Monday:

Lumiere Place under construction:

Initial prep work is under way for the Roberts Tower:

Oh, and by the way, Google Mobile Maps for cell phones has also been updated.

Just to let everyone know, maps.live.com now offers bird's eye view of all of south St. Louis. Before, only north St. Louis and downtown were available.
Enjoy! (I found my house on Itaska!)

Kansas City metro as well as just about the entirety of Douglas County, KS (Larrytown) has "streetlevel" function on Google Earth. I wouldnt think it would be long before St. Louis is on, as the street level shots in KC look to be taken in summer.

Don't larger cities usually get the street level views? I'd think if Kansas City got it STL should soon, since St. Louis metro is bigger.
Although the street shots so the good with the bad. Some of the Detroit ones are awful.

Between looking at those pictures and going around town a bit, am I out of line in thinking the city purposely neglects or de-prioritizes the streets on the north side of town?

I noticed that if you turn 3-D buildings on in google earth, now it shows 3-D models of a lot of buildings in downtown. It used to be just grey blocks.
^Yeah, some people have been busy. Even the warehouses in McRee Town have been done. There are a lot of people out there with a lot of time on their hands I guess.
