Warzone or St. Louis? wrote:Bombed out buildings, homelessness, and innocent civilians being killed in the crossfire are just a few things that describe the city of St. Louis, MO. Or do they describe a war zone? You be the judge!

The site is maintained by several St. Louis residents who have a firm belief that our city is a festering hellhole.

I left the same comment on every picture as follows:

This site is an incredible waste of time. Every city has slums... Why highlight the negative when we have an incredible stock of historic architecture, world class museums, institutions, and Universities, a unique and expansive music, art, and theatre scene. Fortune 500 corporations... The makers of this site are bitter, paranoid and sad individuals that have taken shelter in their Chesterfield bomb shelters in fear that the "mean city folk" are all gangsters, and they are gonna take over the suburbs if they arent careful... In reality, the shallow minded makers of this site are the type of people that can create downsides to anything, or any place, Be it St. Louis, Chicago, Dubai.... grow up.

I doubt the site moderator will allow the post, since its from someone who has different opinions from themselves....

Interestingly, I travel to the Boston burbs quite often, and I frequently hear the locals refer to Boston city as "The War Zone", as in, "I have to go to a function downtown, so it looks like I'm going to have to travel into The War Zone". If a city like Boston can't convince it's suburbanites of the merits of urban living, that the positives outweigh the negatives, what hope does St. Louis have?

I would hope even the urbanphobes who click on this site will laugh it off when they realize the first picture is the Praxair explosion. That was an accident that could have happened anywhere and has absolutely no bearing on the socio-economic status or behavior of the neighborhood residents.

Would these same folks list a picture of the California wildfires with a caption "Malibu or war zone"?

I bet the Chesterfield Chamber of Commerce is behind this.

The ones I voted "war zone" turned out to be St. Louis. The ones I voted "St. Louis" turned out to be war zones.

Great site. Makes you think.

Everybody calm down. That website is inactive and has been inactive for over a year. The first and only page of posts on the site all have dates from March 2007. No other posts were made at any other time.

Just let it go and let the site fade and be forgotten.

Wow. So, you couldn't tell the difference between Iraq and St. Louis? You really need to get out of your loft more.

I would like to create a site where you have to try to distinguish suburbs from eachother. "Is that our Applebees or is that one of the 247 Applebees in Houston." "Is that my vinyl-sided cookie cutter with the bradford pear tree, or is that actually Iowa City?" Make fun of St. Louis City all you like, but at least you know what to make fun of. I can't make fun of St. Louis' sprawling ex-urbs individually because they are all virtually identical. They are basically permutations of the exact same business and housing variables that exist in suburbs across the entire country. Because this environment is so placeless, people are forced to claim affiliation with the nearest actual place, which is why people from Wentzville say they are from St. Louis.

^ No doubt, doesn't that drive you freakin' nuts? I especially hate job postings advertised as "St. Louis" that are actually in Chesterfield.

While I won't go so far as to make the implication that even war zones have better public transit, the streetcar wires on the last "war zone" photo were a dead giveaway it wasn't St Louis.

I thought all those pics in Matguy's post were beautiful. Anyone else?
