Are they trying to hold this area down permanently?

Despite the vinyl, I don't think it looks too bad. :x

That rendering's got to be distorted or something. I take it those are garage doors they're trying to hide?

Yeah, I think that the garage will be below grade. Well, at least mostly.

The design would be terrible on its own, but in the context where it is proposed (around the former Visitation Park) the design is outright mockery. That is an area of two and three story brick homes and apartment buildings in dazzling late Victorian styles.

Designs like this proclaim that this city isn't even trying to be great again.

Disgraceful. This neighborhood deserves much better.

That firm's other designs look pretty bad as well.

This area used to be extremely wealthy with exceptional housing. It would be nicer to see what remains rehabbed rather than these ugly replacements.

I don't hold up much hope for these( vomit emoticon here), but it would be be nice if they had a rendering that wasn't drawn in crayon. Anyone have a pic of the lot where these are proposed. It might help to see the surroundings.

Check them out or drive by yourself. It is a rather depressing sight as the area has so many great homes.

They need to have a brick only ordinance in this area, like they are proposing on the Eastside. This area was once uppermiddle class, and should be in the future. Let's not permanently wreck it with crappy vinyl siding or subsidized apartments.

That is a great idea, but would aldermen support these restrictions? Don't you think developers would pressure against such a "restriction?"

Um, after reviewing builtstlouis, it appears that these will be the only(at least, in the far minority) single-story structures in the neighborhood.

the little idiot alderman in charge who's giving this the green light should be booted out of City Hall. I'd rather see these lots sit vacant, until quality construction can take it's place. Allowing crap to be thrown up (hehe) in a place that clearly was once a high end neighborhood is ridiculous. This area should demand better. I would consider buying a house of Cabanne Place, this new construction makes me think it would be a bad investment. Brick front, vinyl sided houses are tear-down candidates within 20 years. Again, I'd rather just see vacant grass lots than garbage housing. Who is the architect for these anyway?

Keep it in West County Shite for Brains!

Driving around Cabanne I see a lot of projects which are simply not good enough given its history. Moreover, if you drive on Cabanne west of Hamilton and look to your south you will see an example of horrible infill. Across the street to the west at 6015 is a shingle style Charles Ramsey home. That kind of BS shouldn't be allowed.

Oh guys look:

Tour starts at 5703 Enright

Off-street parking and shuttle service is available. Shuttles leave at 12:00pm and 3:00pm

Wife: Oh darling, look at these homes in the City. I hear it is coming back.

Husband: Why yes dear, that City really is changing. Apparently that Mayor Slay is cleaning up the streets. Lets go check out these homes in Dowtown. After we are done why don't we go shopping at Walgreens?

Wife: Only if they had Ann Taylor! Lets pack up Timmy and Susan into the Ford Excursion. We can see some houses! Don't forget Fargo the Golden Retriever!

Husband: Yes and they have off street parking. Wouldn't want anyone to steal our luxurious land yacht. Besides, I can't parallel park in a Geo let alone our SUV! It's so big!

Wife: Oh, yes it is! I like big toys.

Husband: Ha Ha, I know you do!

developments like this go back to the attitude that the city should be happy with whatever development it can get. They are thinking the city is like the desperate dude or chick looking to hook up before the ugly lights come on at 3a.m.

I completely agree. This is like allowing Chesterfield McMansions on Portland and Westmorland. (ok there is one at westmorland and kingshighway). Cabanne is one of St. Louis city's best kept secrets. If I had the dough, I'd buy a house on this street. Unfortunately, this sh*t that is going up down the street really prevents this area from truly appreciating to maximum value and will prevent wealthier citizens from moving back in.

Yes! McMansions destroy the historical continuity thus lower property values and are not as desirable as quality infill. It has been shown that people will pay more for traditional infill over suburban style homes and the pod. Most importantly, that infill have the same material as adjacent buildings. Check out that article published in the Journal of the American Planning Association. Given the City wants to maximize revenue, I would have thought this would be a consideration!
