Yeah, I was afraid of that.  Between the Neuroscience Building and 4343 Duncan, they are losing several hundred parking spaces.

Bulls*it.  Did someone at SLU join WU’s development arm all of a sudden?

I’ve had a few drinks so this might be inappropriate...but f*ck whoever STL Forever is on the NextSTL comments.

FWIW, I don't think their comment is really that bad or off the mark.  They're not wrong in that developments like CORTEX allow demolitions like this to happen, and that overall people don't appreciate what could be when they see a structure that needs some TLC.

And if Washington University was proposing a replacement building instead of a vacant lot, I might agree.  But they’re not.  Imagine if the powers that be had the same opinions about Soulard or Lafayette Square...

Instead we’ll demolish more of our historic architecture for a vacant lot or another surface parking lot.  Seems like a totally appropriate use of land in what is supposed to be an urban tech district...

I mean why not rehab this little block of buildings into apartments for people that work in Cortex? What does another empty lot add to this area? At least a vacant building signifies some potential...

Having worked as a campus planner for wash u med school, I am pretty sure this isn’t being done for nothing. They’re very sneaky with wording “there is nothing -formal- planned”

Yeah, I have no doubt there are plans somewhere on somebody's "table". Might be a couple more years before we know anything, but this site will not be a parking lot for too long.

It's a shame they feel the need to clear the whole group right now, though.

I think a bit of the area south of Forest Park Ave looking like that of the north would help with some of the goals.

Master Plan
Goals
The Master Plan establishes a vision for the
CORTEX District as a mixed-use knowledge
community that will seek to:
1. Attract and retain top research and
ent_repreneurial talent.
2. Connect to surrounding amenities and
neighborhoods.
3. Create a cohesive community through
a structure of open space and complete
streets.
4. Revitalize existing industrial buildings.
5. Strengthen connections to Forest Park
through a greenway along Clayton
Street.
6. Establish a public realm activated
by ground-floor uses, such as retail,
meeting spaces, public amenities and
street science.

No doubt WashU is in a hurry to bring them down before the local reporter and pitchfork-wielding preservationists begin accumulating on the sidewalk...

^I don't think I've ever heard this forum described in quite that way before. Where do I go to pick up my pitchfork?

Ameren is on site today, seemingly removing all their poles and lines in the alley.

Home Depot - Southtown, has a few dozen varieties

💡Check out the 3-Oval Tine RazorBack. Light, nice long handle, and fewer tines; allows for quicker extraction and redeployment times!

Ooh, and if there's a Kobalt/Craftsman/team orange version they might even have a lifetime warranty!

McCarthy moved their Neuroscience construction trailers today to start work on the parking garage.  Not sure where they moved them, or if they'll just use the trailers that have been parked behind 4352 Forest Park Ave for several months.  But I'd guess the timing isn't a coincidence, and this new surface lot and the existing one south of it will become McCarthy's site office/staging area/parking.
