Holy crap! Could this beautiful Mediterranean-revival four family flat at 5068-5070 Pernod really be getting clad in vinyl?

I don't have a lot of details and I am awaiting more information from my friend who sent the image (he's horrified as it's around the corner from him). They may just be doing the parapet instead of properly tuck-pointing which, beyond aesthetics, is totally inappropriate and will contribute to the deterioration of the structure.

If you'd like to send a letter to the owner expressing your displeasure you can always check the property database.

This is just a couple of blocks from that hideously prominent vinyl rooftop addition at the corner of Chippewa and Brannon. Doesn't that neighborhood have any esthetic watchdog?

And then there's the house (which I think is at the intersection of Pernod Avenue and Regal Place) with the two-story vinyl-clad addition built atop an otherwise attractive and sensibly-sized brick bungalow. It has inspired comparisons to the Old Woman Living in a Shoe nursery rhyme, and it's every bit as repulsive as the sliced-up double-wide that landed on top of the Keller Apothecary building and the vinyl that now blights that otherwise attractive apartment building.

So now one of the city's most attractive neighborhoods is home to some serious eyesores!

Ah yes. As Matt calls it, "The Leaning Tower of Pernod".

This really should be a historic district or design review district. It's a really cohesive neighborhood right now, but with more unflattering "renovations" like those mentioned in this post, that will no longer be true down the road.

I have actually started emailing some of the apartment owners on Craigslist saying I would never rent an apartment in a historic building with suburban doors, unnecessary vinyl headdress, etc.

Perhaps this and other vinyl crimes will get some neighborhood residents to organize and demand more say in what's done to preserve or destroy their neighborhood fabric!

Nerfdude - that's insane.

We should start a St. Louis abominations thread where we post pictures of the most misguided and incomprehensible disfigurations of otherwise attractive buildings in the city. The "leaning tower of Pernod" by the way looks like an RV landed on the roof and got stuck. I wish a tornado would hit it.

Can they really do this? I would call/email the alderman & city inspectors. This shouldn't be allowed.

The house on Pernod is horrible, I laugh & cry at the same time whenever I drive by it. I guess I'm happy they invested so much in the city, but couldn't they invest it in rehabbing a larger house in Tower Grove?

The vinyl has stopped at the point shown in the above photo. Still butt-ugly, though.

I don't get it. That's probably $500 in tuckpointing to do it right.
