It seems that Missouri has way too many billboards along its roads. Didn't Lady Bird Johnson spearhead an effort to remove billboards? This would be a much more attractive place without them.

US 67 from Fredericksburg to Farmington is a pretty drive--mainly due to the lack of billboards.

Those along I-70 popped up a few years ago when there was an effort to limit billboards on the freeways. The billboard companies planted them before the bill went on the ballot. Now look at what we have. Yuck!

^ I agree, the drive down U.S. 67 between Farmington and Fredericktown is quite nice.

IIRC, Missourians were given the chance to restrict billboards further and rejected it. I wonder if anyone's sorry now? I-70 is an embarrassment. Missouri is a state with much natural beauty, but the stretch of I-70 between Kansas City and St. Louis is a wasteland (save for the notable exception of Columbia, which would still look better with fewer billboards).

Off topic, but I think a massive planting of maples, oaks and pine trees about 40 feet in depth on either side of the interstate would help tremendously. It'd take 30 years to mature, but would be worth it. The fields near Truxton, High Hill aren't that interesting.

Does the state or DOT collect any tax on the billboards, seeing they only work with the investment of public money in roads? No highway no billboards, so you should help pay for your medium. I would think (if they don't already) the advertisers should pay a higher tax rate or a usage fee based on AADT or some other traffic counts, the more cars, the more exposure, the more $$.

I am not going to get into specific locations (say all along highway 70), but there are way to many billboards in Missouri.

I would be interested in how the money works. If there was not a direct profit from the billboards, they should be eliminated. The picture of Missouri that forms from people that just drove through Illinois or Kansas (where there are fewer billboards) is not good.

I agree. It's a dismal looking stretch of road, compounded by the seemingly neverending rows of billboards.
