Uhhh, the new strip mall is now @ 50% occupancy w/ it's 3rd tenant. Sorry
couldn't resist a little jab at this college town. Boredom does that to a person. Actually, if I had the money & a quick & easy way to escape to STL more often I'd stick around & start a couple businesses that would make would create more of a college-vibe in this sleepy town. I know exactly which buildings I'd buy & what I'd put in them.

I've never been to Maryville - I'd be interested in seeing some pics if you have any. Sounds like it needs to take better advantage of its status as a college town.

I'd like to see some pictures of Maryville (a little homework for you, NFH, if you ever get the chance).
I'm sure it could be a cool little town, but it sounds like it has a bit of an identity crisis. Like DeBaliviere said, it seems like it could do a better job of embracing its status as a college town. And like bpe said, there's a bit of an identity crisis. I think it's the only Missouri public university besides UMKC, UMSL, and my alma mater (Southeast Missouri State) that hasn't changed its name in the last decade. Maybe they should. Here's my scorecard:
Northeast Missouri State University-----> Truman State University (Kirksville)
Southwest Missouri State University-----> Missouri State University (Springfield)
University of Missouri at Rolla-----> Missouri University of Science and Technology (Rolla)
Central Missouri State University-----> University of Central Missouri (Warrensburg)
Missouri Western State College-----> Missouri Western State University (Saint Joseph)
Missouri Southern State College-----> Missouri Southern State University (Joplin)
Harris-Stowe State College-----> Harris-Stowe State University (Saint Louis)
University of Missouri at Columbia-----> proposed change would drop "at Columbia" (Why this is necessary, I haven't a clue!)
Maybe if Northwest can't beat 'em, they should join 'em!
Oops...almost forgot...Lincoln University in Jefferson City is state-supported and AFAIK has no plans to change its name.

I'll get around to posting some pics one of these days. Geez, just what I need. Homework
We were very near a name change a couple years ago. Came very close to joining the U of M system & becoming the University of Missouri Northwest. Since University of Missouri Maryville would have been UMM, that didn't fly too well.
They really wanted to do it when Mo West went from "College" to "University"
MWSU, whatever.
Northwest Missouri State University--The only
real university north of KC

I will post this as a sign of the recent construction boom in Maryville.

Take your time- I've got plenty of homework myself. And whenever I get downtime during the day, I've been scanning outstate papers for development news! Yes, I lead an exciting life!
The county administration building in that rendering looks bland to me, but I'm sure it will still be a nice addition for Maryville. It reminds me of a courthouse annex recently constructed in Farmington- it's a white brick/stone building that's nothing special, but it still adds to the appearance of the courthouse square there.

I've always thought it was unfortunate that our flagship state university and our state capitol are in two separate cities, albeit cities that are fairly close together. If Mizzou was in Jeff City or the capitol was in Columbia, we might have our own version of Madison, WI.

ive always thought this too, but at the same time, columbia has an independent vibe that might not be as pronounced if it were combined with jeff. i don't know that we would have a madison, wi...maybe closer to a metro springfield, il.

I've had similar thoughts. What are Jeff City & Columbia? 30 miles apart?
I've fantasized about building up the area between the 2 cities add some infrastructure, another bridge or two over the Missouri River & ending up w/ a kind of mini Twin Cities vibe. I think both cities could benefit form each other.
A little more development betwen the 2 & each city would mentally feel a little closer.
I haven't had a chance to take any pictures of Maryville yet, but the university has proposed an urban village be built right next to campus. I wonder if this will be built before ballpark village. I'd hate to think of Maryville as more urban than STL.

Rural colleges around the country are urbanizing by developing residential and commercial areas near their campuses.
The Northwest Foundation is considering developing its own "Village at Northwest.....

Here's the second part of the story. I'll post a link to the third when it become available.

Marketing research will soon begin to determine if there is interest in developing the "Village at Northwest."
If the Northwest Foundation decides to build the urban-style village, there would be a mixture of stores, restaurants, single-family homes, town houses and loft-style condominiums....
