Per this article in the PD:

http://www.stltoday.com/stltoday/news/s ... enDocument

Why in the world would someone build this in Vandalia, Illinois? I went to a small college near there, and there is no way I would go to Vandalia (we called it "Clan"dalia) for anything.

Last night on Channel 5, the developer said that they expect to draw tourists from Indy, Chicago and St. Louis.

Why would a person from Chicago drive downstate 4 hours to go to a water park in Vandalia? I don't think someone from Waterloo would do that...ok, they might.

Anyway, I think this sounds fishy.

When I saw "sports" complex, I was thinking maybe they were banking on Chicago getting the Olympics, and setting up events there. But with the IMAX and other additions, it seems more tourist-oriented.

If you think about it, the proposal isn't as far-fetched as it first seems.

Vandalia may be 4 hours from Chicago, but it's only 69 miles from the city of St Louis (about an hour's drive by Interstate 70). In fact, the town lies just barely outside the St Louis MSA. Which means that the development would potentially tap into the St Louis metro area's 2.9 million persons.

But as to why the developer chose Vandalia over other Southern Illinois cities located on interstate highways (like Mt Vernon), that remains a mystery.

This is a total joke. This developer (if you can call them that) does this all over the country. To my knowledge none of them have ever been built. They are proposing basically the exact same development right now for Winchester, KY outside Lexington.

Forget about this one ... it ain't happening.

Yep, exactly! They have proposed this in different cities like 4 times in the past 2 years.
