More than 80 buildings, from a former church to former state offices, could qualify for federal redevelopment tax credits under a significant expansion of the downtown Springfield historic district approved Monday.

The Springfield Historic Sites Commission voted 10-0 in favor of the first major expansion of the Central Springfield Historic District since it was created nearly 40 years ago. Subject to state and federal approval, the 20 percent federal tax credit should be available to potential developers sometime this summer.
