I know there have been lots of discussions about the lid on 70.

Does anyone know about any ideas or plans for a lid over 40??

Talk about a barrier for southern sprawl.

Is this in the cards at all?

Where on Hwy. 40/I-64 are you referring to them putting a lid?

i haven't exactly thought this through, but I just don't like seeing highways cut through downtown.

That's going to be kinda tough to do since 40 is a double decker through most of Downtown.

You are thinking more along the lines of Boston's "Big Dig" and not simply putting a lid over a depressed section. Considering the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) has allocated $32 million towards retrofitting the elevated sections of Highway 40 (Interstate 64) downtown to increase their ability to withstand earthquake loads (much of which has already been completed), I don't think you will see this happen anytime in the near future.

I think the only area where the highway is a problem (and the problem could be remedied) is where the depressed lanes separate the arch grounds from the CBD.

I hope that the arch connector is a big hit and that eventually the surrounding blocks could be covered as well.

A big problem is the area at Memorial Drive and Washington, where the highway starts to elevate. It really f---s up pedestrian flow.

Once the new bridge is built, They could close that section to bury it without much disruption. Then the highway could flow through downtown without any blockages. That would really help the areas around it become more cohesive.

I think once the new bridge is completed, they should remove the whole interstate from the new bridge to the Poplar bridge. That would really do wonders to reconnect downtown with the arch and Laclede's Landing. Once the new bridge is built, do we really need that section of highway anymore? It's only two lanes each way. Imagine the possibilities if it weren't there at all.

Wait a minuet I take that stretch of highway to work everyday, the last thing I want to do is be forced to take 270.

Well once the new Bridge is complete, you would just take the the bybass around downtown. If you look at ILdot's Website for the Bridge , there will be a connector between the new bridge and the Poplar Bridge on the EStL side of the River. I think that would work for you.
