Depends where you are walking to.
Your safety depends largely on how vigilant you are about it. If you go walking around at night with no regards for your surroundings then chances are you could find trouble. Fortunately, the CWE Metrolink stop is at the hospital which normally has security but at the same time does have it's share of sketchy characters.
Maryland to the CWE Metro is completely safe. Euclid, which is the most direct route, is full of pedestrian activity around that time.

Like Wabash says, I wouldn't be worried about walking up Euclid from the CWE Metro stop to Maryland late at night - you may encounter the occasional panhandler on Euclid, but that's about it. With all the various bars and restaurants, there are usually quite a few pedestrians around until early in the morning, and both the SLPD and Wash. U. patrol the area.
I would be a little more careful at night on the stretch of Euclid north of Maryland (up to Washington), as this isn't as well lit and there are likely to be fewer people on the street (especially since the recent closure of several businesses). There have been occasional reports of robberies/muggings after dark on that section of Euclid, though car break-ins seem to be a more persistent problem; it's perfectly safe during the day.
The neighborhood starts to go downhill noticeably once you get more than a couple of blocks east of Euclid, and I wouldn't recommend walking north of Delmar at night (or hanging around Cook and Taylor at any time of day

YES!!! Safe!!
It's a sad day when anyone on an alleged urban board says anything to the contrary. We're not talking about a drug corner at 4 AM. Hell. I've been around there at 1.30 AM. I'm still here.

I do it every day. Often times that late at night, too. It's safe. Just don't be a dumbass and you'll be fine.
I also frequently walk from the hospital to Lindell/Euclid at all hours, and have never had a problem. Just be vigilant. There's a certain miniscule chance that you'll be held up, but in all honesty it's probably little higher at night that it is in the daytime.
I don't know where on Maryland you're headed to, but Euclid is the busiest pedestrian street- Taylor and Newstead can be more desolate at night. Euclid and Taylor is quite possibly the busiest pedestrian intersection in the entire city, so I think you're pretty safe there.
It's always fun to go running up and down the streets of the CWE, you can really see some differences block to block. It's particularly interesting up on Olive and Washington, which have tremendous potential, but are kind of rundown, then you go a block south to westminster, and have beautifully maintained mansions. Any of those streets are fine during the day, and probably night as well.

Like others have said, the CWE stop, then up Euclid to Maryland is fine. The cross streets are very safe too... but as others pointed out Taylor to the east is not as pedestrian friendly. (It's actually fine... just not as well lit or traveled by foot.)
Actually, the whole neighborhood where you are is safe -- I would say from MacPherson on the north, Kingshighway on the west, Barnes-Jewish on the south, and Newstead on the east. Completely safe for night walking as long as you are alert. I would not walk north of MacPherson at night... and I would not walk north of Delmar or east of Boyle at any time until you are more familiar with the area.

you should NOT be walking north of Washington or Delmar at night alone. Save the PC crap too, I'm being a complete realist here. Those areas north of Delmar are incredible to explore during the daytime, but I wouldn't be in a car around that area at night, except when I was in high school and we used to buy beer at 25/7 on Taylor just north of Delmar...
Enright is THE NEXT street to be redeveloped, just watch! Incredible housing stock, and most of it hasn't been torn down. go east on Enright from Taylor, you'll be amazed!
Enright has some sexy buildings most definitely, but I wouldn't walk North of Delmar at night either, unless you are with a group of people.
D.B.A.D.A., don't be a dumb ass, are words to live by. Be mindful of your surroundings and don't look like a target. That being said, the CWE is very safe and I wouldn't worry.

CWE Metro to Maryland is completly safe, at any time of the day or night. I walk it reguarly. Any possible cross streets you may take to get there are also safe. You do have to watch out for people on thier electric wheel chairs, they will run you over. I don't know where they all come from but there is alot of them.

Man you really must not know what the hell you are talking about!!! I live at 4919 McPherson and thats around Euclid and McPherson and I also walk to the Metro stop everyday. I least lit part of Euclid is south of Lindell!!! Walk it at night and youll see what im talking about. Also walking east of Euclid the area does not go down the farther east you go, its nice all the way to SLU, Midtown. I was just walking Olive,Wittier,Boyle,McPherson lastnight around 11pm, oh and did I say I am a skinny white jewish boy. I have also walked at night one or two blocks north of Delmar to a friends house who lives at Enright and Euclid and its just fine as well, but I would not go much further then that. I have lived in the CWE for a couple of years and the people that have problems are people that dont know to be aware of their surroundings. I cant tell you guys how many times Ive walked up behind or next to someone and they jump or freckout. oh and washington, olive, westminster are all very lit and safe to walk at night.

Thanks for the alternative viewpoint. However, I've lived in the Central Corridor and worked in the CWE and Midtown areas for the past 20 years; I often walk through these areas at night, and I stand by my original comments. The immediate vicinity of the intersection of McPherson and Euclid is OK after dark, but over the years there have been a few robberies and other "incidents" on the mainly residential segment of Euclid just to the north of Maryland. As long as people keep their eyes open they should be safe, but there are generally fewer pedestrians on that stretch of Euclid at night than on the portion south of Maryland. While the street lighting south of Lindell is indeed poor, this is offset to some extent by the storefronts, etc., which remain lit up after closing (though sadly there aren't as many of those as there used to be).
As for the neighborhood to the east of Euclid, I see a definite drop-off or deterioration starting around Boyle (also see the posts by Tysalpha and Jeff707 to this effect - I'm not the only one who's noticed it) and it doesn't pick up until you reach SLU. I tend to assess the safety of neighborhoods on a block-by-block basis, and while I've walked between Grand and Euclid along Lindell at night on a couple of occasions, I wouldn't do it on the parallel streets to the north, especially between Spring/Vandeventer and Boyle.
Sorry to bring this thread back up, but I was wondering what the general consensus on the Grand MetroLink station at 10:30pm-midnight was. If I were transferring from a train to a southbound 70 Grand at that time of night, would there be enough people around for me to be relatively safe? Tower Grove East/South is an area I am looking into living this summer and would have to come home around that time a couple nights a week. According to the scheduled frequency at that time, I could potentially be waiting there for up to half an hour.

My wife and I come home from the Symphony there often between 10-11pm on Fridays. There are usually a good dozen people waiting around, and more upstairs waiting on buses. It's good to know the schedule though.
The creepiest thing about the Grand Av. station is the looooooooong walk over the viaduct along that confined, no-place-to-hide sidewalk.

I know. That whole stop is so profoundly ill-planned.

I use the Grand station most nights of the week, often after 10.00 pm, and have never encountered any major problems or incidents. Having said that, I walk down Grand to catch the train, so I can usually time my arrival at the station to minimize the wait. A few other points:
The good: In the last couple of weeks, they've greatly improved the lighting at the bus stop level on the overpass and on the stairs going down to the platform on both sides of Grand. The old semi-opaque half-bowl light fixtures have been replaced with much brighter lights, and there are now two of them on the bus stop level (one either side of the elevator doors) in place of the previous single light. This has made a remarkable difference to the general atmosphere around the bus stop at night. The frequency with which graffiti on the stairs is painted over seems to have increased too.
The bad: The security guards stay down on the platform and never go upstairs at all, as far as I can tell, so neither they nor the security cameras are monitoring the bus stop. Over the years, there have been a couple of reports of SLU students being robbed on the upper level, though these incidents usually happened earlier in the day. I haven't heard of any such occurrences in recent months. Still, if you're looking at a very long wait between getting off the train and catching the bus, it may actually be preferable to wait on the platform for a while, especially in bad weather (there's no shelter whatsoever on the upper level).
The ugly: The increased illumination levels evidently haven't stopped people using the stairs as latrines...

Yes, this is horrible. I've walked it many times at night, alone, etc.
No probs though. The worst was when some jerkface had his two pitbulls going apesh*t and we passed about in the middle. Horrible planning. It's almost like being in a "corner".
BUT the CWE station might as well be in Clayton to me. Totaslly safe.
