In addition to NPR GC has landed another radio station. Good for KDHX!!!

Long-running radio station KDHX-FM (88.1) is making some major moves.

The independent, community station today received a gift of space in the heart of Grand Center, and will move into a space at 3524 Washington Ave.

The gift was given to honor the contributions of the late Larry J. Weir, a longtime on-air personality and one of the founders of the station, as well as to provide the opportunity for organizational growth.

Awesome! This is the old Creepy Crawl space, right? I know that when they were looking at the Sun Theater, they planned on bringing Double Helix with them. Is that still the plan, or is this just the radio station?

I love seeing these organizations concentrating in Grand Center. It seems like such a natural fit. I'd love to have the Rep move there someday, too, as was discussed a few years ago.

There's something really amazing coming together in midtown. I'm not sure what exactly it will be yet, but with the convergence of so many dynamic, progressive, creative organizations, the foundation is being laid for an absolute cultural nexus of a neighborhood.

Midtown will soon be home to SLU, Powell, Fox, Grandel, Moolah, Sheldon,, Pulitzer, Contemporary, Chaifetz, Moto Museum, Jazz at the Bistro, KDHX, PBS, KWMU and a new SLU Hotel. Add to that all of the storefronts being filled by a host of art galleries, Pappy's, Sweetie Pie's, City Diner, Buffalo Brewing, The U, and others throughout "midtown alley". Also, it will still lie at the center of the city's busiest bus route, 70 Grand, with over 10,000 boardings per day.

I hope all of the increasing attention and activity (KDHX has how many live on-air performances each week?) the Metropolitan Building will get another look from a worthy developer, and that the neighborhood in general will start to see some infill.

A pair of streetcar lines criss-crossing at Lindell and Grand would certainly help, and make much more sense that a Loop trolley, but that's for a different topic.

Reading the press release from KDHX, I see that they are also planning a "street level cafe".

BTW, Wabash, plans to turn the Metropolitan Building into artist's lofts are progressing. We should hear an announcement before the end of the year. Also, plans for a hotel in the old City Health Department building at 634 N. Grand are still alive too.

Is KDHX still planning on renovating the old Creepy Crawl in midtown? It was announced in August 2010, but I haven't heard of or seen any recent activity.

Any news on this front? Any signs of construction starting. I'm looking forward to KDHX following in KWMU's footsteps.

I was down there a few weeks ago and saw a few contractors going in and out. I will give a report when I check it out tomorrow.

Construction is underway. There's a fence around the site, a debris chute going down the side of the building, and a nice big banner announcing the "Future Home of KDHX".

The whole project is bloody awesome, and the new sign really ads tremendously to the street scene in Grand Center. Check out this photo:

Executive director of KDHX on the way out...
KDHX Radio (FM 88.1) executive director Beverly Hacker has been placed on administrative leave.

Hacker, who joined the station in 1993 and became the director in 1998, said she was notified July 27 of the board's decision.

Perhaps they are having financial problems because they devote an inordinate amount of their waking-hours broadcast time to sleepytime hillbilly, blues, and folk genres. That is a major reason I stopped contributing.

Honestly, this is a GOLDEN opportunity for KDHX to get some new blood at the helm and reorganize the station format into something a little more reflective of this century. They could use it.

So are you saying they are going to change their format to top 20 hits/trash and gossip talk format?

I'm saying way more coin operated radio, way more beep beep boop boop, way more wax murderer - music from this century. A heavy focus on things reviewed on Pitchfork, Stereogum, AVClub, living acts that are currently touring, and local startup bands. Way less ancient blues, hillbilly, folk - music from the middle of last century that currently dominates KDHX. It would massively boost the station's listenability and finances.
